"Well, pieces of metal lying around the floor like that do not really impress me. Says nothing to me, does nothing for me, wants nothing from me. But the title does appeal to me. Reminds me of Sunday afternoons when I was a child, watching Laurel and Hardy." (Friedrich von Borries)

“That’s supposed to be art?” – “I could do that myself!” These are often the spontaneous responses of surprised museum visitors when they encounter contemporary art. Marta Herford has now deliberately taken such comments as an opportunity for an unusual exhibition project with works from its own collection.

Why does contemporary art evince perplexity and incomprehension in some people, and enthusiasm and fascination in others? And “What is good art anyway?” is a question asked not only by the visitor – curators, art critics and researchers are constantly engaging with the ever new themes and questions that contemporary artists pose.

The interactive exhibition combines selected films, sculptures, paintings, photographs and drawings with simple questions and reflections on contemporary art. Visitors to the exhibition can continue the thus opened dialogue and take part in an exchange in the accompanying digital platforms. The well-known author, curator and Monopol columnist Friedrich von Borries provided some unusual text insertions for the exhibition.

Comment cards invite the visitor to enter into a dialogue with the works and with other visitors. Each work is also accompanied by a text by Friedrich von Borries in which the author,
curator and Monopol columnist gives his own personal impressions of the exhibit. Active, creative engagement is also possible: At the centre of the exhibition room there is a workbench with all sorts of materials. Anyone who wants can apply artistic techniques here himself. Is it really as simple as it often appears? The exhibited works serve more as a source of inspiration than as an exact template.

An exhibition, in which opinion counts and in which questions that one perhaps was afraid to ask are expressly welcome!
