We’re turning the spotlight on the finest works in the Hamburger Kunsthalle collection! SPOT ON is a display of more than 200 masterpieces from our permanent collection, spanning from the Old Masters to 19th-century art and Classical Modernism through to the art of the present day. Visitors can see almost 600 years of art history unfold in this fascinating exhibition, which extends over 2,000 m2 on the lower ground floor of the Galerie der Gegenwart. SPOT ON reflects the strengths of the Hamburger Kunsthalle collection – Dutch Golden Age painting, French Impressionism, the Expressionist artists’ groups Brücke and Der Blaue Reiter, as well as Pop art and Vienna Actionism – and also features major groups of works by Caspar David Friedrich, Philipp Otto Runge, Max Liebermann and Edvard Munch that are among the museum’s most significant holdings. The thematically arranged installation encourages viewers to consider the collection from a different perspective: the artworks are grouped according to themes such as role and identity, nature and culture or gesture, material and rhythm.

In addition to being highlights of the Hamburger Kunsthalle collection, exhibits such as Johann Georg Hinz’s Kunstkammerregal (1666), Caspar David Friedrich’s Das Eismeer (1823/24), Édouard Manet’s Nana (1877) or Max Beckmann’s Odysseus und Kalypso (1943) are also extremelyimportant from an art-historical point of view. SPOT ON not only gives visitors the chance to see familiar artworks in a new light, it also gives prominence to a number of works that have not been on public display for a long time. The Kunsthalle is taking this opportunity to present the impressive site-specific installations Measurements of Time (1996) by Richard Serra and Healing with Paintings (1996) by Ilya Kabakov.
