New British Painting: Part II

John Hansard Gallery, Southampton

Diann Bauer, Juan Bolivar, Pearl Hsiung, Andrea Mejesi-Jones, Miho Sato. This exhibition, the second in the John Hansard Gallery's series celebrating contemporary painting, explores the area of practice between recognisable figurative imagery and that which is more abstract or other-wordly. Whilst some of the standard formal concerns of structure and method are present in the work shown, the second part of series unites a younger generation of artists whose work prioritises colour, image and cultural reference above texture and material. The works, some specially commissioned for this exhibition, are united by their reference to popular culture, often communicated through the appropriation or reworking of comic and cartoon imagery.

Diann Bauer, commissioned to produce a site-specific wall based piece for this exhibition, references a type of imagery which is comic or illustrative in style, yet her work possesses a dark and disturbing dimension. Juan Bolivar makes seemingly formalistic and geometric paintings, but imbues them with a subtly twisted and comical quality, whilst Pearl Hsiung's use of simplistic cartoon-like images alongside more abstracted backgrounds, produces paintings that are a curious combination of recognisable forms and ‘other-worldliness'.

In making works that mimic science-fictional images and futuristic predictions, Andrea Medjesi-Jones' work displays a reassuringly personal response to an age of impersonal advanced technology. Miho Sato draws upon popular images from film, TV, music or popular culture, then remakes them in a simplified, more ‘painterly' way, to produce a ghostly and unnerving re-working of the original.

The exhibition has been curated and organised by the John Hansard Gallery. A publication featuring the work of all artists represented in New British Painting: Part I and New British Painting: Part II, will be launched in March 2004. The text features an introduction to each of the ten artists and an extended essay, and is illustrated in colour throughout.

Short Histories of Video (formerly known as Video Waves)
This weekly series, divided into two parts, features the video works of artists made from the advent of portable video technology to the present day. The series includes rarely seen early tapes from the UK, Europe and the USA, and more recent work by internationally renowned contemporary artists. Each week will see the screening of the work of a single artist, according to the schedule listed below.

* 17-21 February - Vito Acconci - Theme Song (USA, 1973)
A very funny muscial comedy by one of the world's great video artists
* 24-28 February - David Hall - TV Fighter (Cam Era Plane) (UK, 1977)
An exploration of the properties of the medium of video using war footage of a dive-bomber attacking its targets before the camera takes over and sets the monitor in its sights

A video essay made up of found footage featuring British dance culture from the early 70s Norther all-nighters to late 80s raves
* 23-27 March - Alex McQuilkin - Fucked (USA, 2000) [ UK premiere ]
A controversial piece when first shown at the Armory Fair in New York two years ago, not just on account of its sexual content but because what is shown in the video is not all that it seems
