Continuing its devotion to the work of young international artists, the Buia Gallery is pleased to present "Social Order," a group exhibition featuring the works of Paolo Consorti, Shay Kun, Blake Sandberg, and Tim Wilson. Each of the four artists implements a different stylistic and technical approach to contemporary figuration and portraiture to arrive at a response to the societal mechanisms permeating culture.

Paolo Consorti, through the combination of the digital and painterly mediums, arranges large-scale, vibrant, distant, science fiction-like scenarios on canvas. Utilizing sparse compositional elements and manipulated scales, the resulting works highlight Consorti's powerful weaving of the historical past with the potential future to arrive at an essentialization of human tendencies.

Shay Kun accesses a refined, yet purposefully comic and graphically influenced painting style to, through the format of portraiture, highlight and critique the downfalls and gluttonous underpinnings of the flagrantly rich. Possessing a distinct relation to the absurd, Kun's images question how far evolution and civilization have taken us from our primitive origins.

Blake Sandberg constructs story-board like frames via a confident, gestural painting style in bold acrylics on paper. The resulting figurative and text-based images retain a certain simplicity while constructing an elusive reference system which establishes an alluring tension with the viewer.

Tim Wilson, through a technically exceptional photorealistic hand, renders nearly breathing images of sections of bodies, later known to be of toy figurines. Constructing a dialogue between a traditional portrait and a deconstruction thereof, Wilson challenges the composition and power structure of portraiture. The hyper-reality of the images enhances the intended social critique by furthering the distance between portrait and viewer.
