Voina Talk

Kunsthalle Sankt Gallen, St. Gallen

Natalia Sokol and Oleg Vorotnikov

sintesi del comunicato stampa

Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen welcomes Natalia Sokol, who together with her husband Oleg Vorotnikov is one of the founding and core members of the Russian artist collective Voina for a public talk (in English) on Tuesday, 28 April 2015 at 6:30 p.m. Since their formation in 2006 Voina (english: War) have hit the headlines with their agitation in public space and their open critique against the Putin regime. Their actions that are usually close to illegality as well as the myths being built around the members involved , such as repeated arrests and confrontation with the Russian police power, caused great indignation even in western media. Today, Voina consists of a loose association of a multiplicity of artists and activists and continues to be active. Natalia Sokol (1980, Russia) studied molecular physics at Lomonosov Moscow State University and finished her PhD in 2006. Since she had already been a member of the group at that time and thus a further pursuing of her carrier was made impossible by the state institutions, Sokol evolved into the main author and coordinator of a variety of the group's actions. While being an iconic role model for artists and activists in Russia, Sokol and her family had to face continuous attacks on the part of local authorities and the police. At Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen Sokol talks about Voinass development as well as their artistic and political work.
