Giles Round: Monument

With Monument, the penultimate installment of Alterity Display, Giles Round creates a sculptural installation that plays with light and colour. Utilizing Celine Condorelli's wooden structure as a means to partially reduce the daylight heightens the impression of a late night venue. Monument offers a romanticised view of nightlife.

Two lines of square Perspex lettering traverse the gallery spelling out the biblical phrase 'but we shall all be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye.' Round's choice of text, removed from its original context, becomes by turns whimsical and emotive.

At one end of the sentence lies a mirrored square platform, lit from above by a stationary disco light. The tinted mirror is banded with crystal dust and supports a plant known for its sedative properties. At the other end, two strobes face the text, flashing out of sync. On the walls, black rhomboid shapes of paper are each haloed with the subtle glow of a variety of bright colours.

Round's installation suggests an idea of a landscape, the city at night. Its mood is one of reflection, perhaps melancholic or hopeful. There is a darker undertone, the threat of isolation and emptiness after the spectacle has been played out.

Giles Round lives and works in London. He has completed an MA in painting from the Royal College of Art. Shows include An Elegant Universe with Dietmar Lutz at Generator Projects, Dundee, 2004; Pretty Little Things at The Ship, London, 2003; and Typeofgravy at Cell Projects, 2002.
