New Obsessions in Figurative Sculpture
Striking figurative works by some of the world’s leading contemporary artists will be on view in Buffalo beginning April 22 at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, a leading international center of modern and contemporary art. Organized by the Albright-Knox, Bodily Space: New Obsessions in Figurative Sculpture features 18 works by such artists as Bruce Nauman, Janine Antoni, Robert Gober, Ron Mueck, Tony Oursler, Maurizio Cattelan, and Antony Gormley. Among the highlights are Mueck’s comical, yet solemn work Untitled (Big Man), 2000, which has become hugely popular with visitors to the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
The exhibition offers an impressive array of contemporary works, which uniquely complement and resonate with a sculptural legacy that began with Rodin and his innovative approach to the sculptural body.
These are among the finest examples of recent figurative sculpture by very important artists from around the world, said Albright-Knox Project Curator Holly E. Hughes. We are pleased to be able to bring this caliber of contemporary sculpture to Buffalo and hope people will take this opportunity to experience the different ways figurative artists are working today.
This exhibition will feature an outstanding array of borrowed works by an international group of sculptors working in a variety of mediums, many who have not been previously exhibited at the Gallery: Janine Antoni, Maurizio Cattelan, Katharina Fritsch, Robert Gober, Antony Gormley, Duane Hanson, Ron Mueck, Juan Muñoz, Bruce Nauman, Tony Oursler, Nam June Paik, Alan Rath, Charles Ray, Peter Sarkisian, Kiki Smith and Spencer Tunick.
This exhibition will complement two other exhibitions: first, a comprehensive exhibition of works by Auguste Rodin, considered the greatest sculptor since Michelangelo; and later in the summer, an exhibition of figurative works from the Albright-Knox’s own highly regarded collection of modern and contemporary art.
