Paradiso e Inferno

Amore, estasi, bellezza, felicità, libertà e pace. Ma anche disperazione, dolore, menzogna, odio, sofferenza e terrore. Sentimenti paradisiaci e stati d'animo infernali, realtà unite e allo stesso tempo contrapposte. Cercherà di metterle in mostra Dal Paradiso all'Inferno un percorso realizzato da 12 artisti per la Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa. La loro selezione è avvenuta mescolando volutamente i più giovani ai più noti, gli stranieri di fama internazionale e gli emergenti. Nel caso di Dragana Spanjos, già studente dell'Accademia di Venezia, si è attinto all'archivio giovani della Fondazione medesima.

Paradiso e Inferno è una mostra a cura di Giacinto Di Pietrantonio, direttore della Galleria d'arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Bergamo, che si snoderà nelle due sedi della Fondazione Bevilacqua la Masa di Venezia: nella galleria di piazza San Marco andrà in scena il Paradiso, a Palazzetto Tito protagonista sarà l'Inferno. Ogni artista affronterà una problematica legata alle paure e ai desideri ancestrali dell'umanità, la più legata alla sua specifica poetica.

Paradiso e Inferno metterà a disposizione di ogni artista una sala in cui saranno esposte una o più opere relative alle tematiche proposte. Si tratta di un progetto dal sapore dantesco e consapevolmente ambizioso, nella certezza che in epoca di grandi cambiamenti etici occorre avere il coraggio, pure con la dovuta umiltà, di ripensare ai grandi temi della vita.

Lo schema del percorso proposto:

PARADISO

1. AMORE: MIKE KELLEY (USA) Quadri con superfici realizzate incollando centinaia di bottoni multicolori. Le superfici si presentano come piani festosi e in movimento che esprimono gioia di vivere ottenuta attraverso l'uso di semplici oggetti quotidiani che portiamo sugli abiti, prima pelle artificiale del nostro corpo.
2. BELLEZZA: ETTORE SPALLETTI (Italia) ''Tre quadri bianchi e oro di grandi dimensioni''. La Bellezza è da sempre il focus del lavoro di Ettore Spalletti che, con superfici piane e vibrate da colori rosa, azzurri, verdi, gialli e bianchi che convivono con bordi dorati, ci rimanda attraverso dei piani astratti al mondo della pittura antica. Egli infatti instaura relazioni con il mondo immacolato di Beato Angelico e con l'esattezza della tersa geometria di Piero della Francesca, o col disegno e l'incarnato diafano di Raffaello.
3. ESTASI: DECOSTRED & RAM (Francia) ''Il buon Odore di Cristo, aria d'Artificio'' è una installazione spandiprofumo. Una scultura che scende dal soffitto come una sorta di fungo rovesciato fino quasi a toccare il pavimento, rilascia nell'ambiente un odore soave: un estatico profumo che gli autori, due architetti, chiamano ''Il buon Odore di Cristo, aria d'Artificio'' è il punto d'arrivo dell'installazione. Così facendo essi lavorano sulla credulità e la possibilità di azioni miracolose valide per chi ci crede, ma da porre all'attenzione anche di chi non ci crede.
4. FELICITA': PATRICK TUTTOFUOCO (Italia) Otto sculture luminose che come una sorta di ''minigrattacieli'' occupano lo spazio della sala come pezzi di una scacchiera dai quali dipartono luci e suoni che fendono lo spazio, modificandone la percezione. Con questa opera si stabilisce una relazione tra noi, l'arte e lo spazio in un'azione di felice interazione di uno spazio che finisce per metterci all'interno di un'opera d'arte totale
5. LIBERTA': ARMIN LINKE, (Italia) ''G 8'', 2001: in scena ci sono le foto della manifestazioni del G8 di Genova. La libertà per l'artista è lo spazio della nostra esistenza nella quale possiamo manifestare il nostro pensiero, è quella zona della coscienza in cui possiamo acconsentire e dissentire. In questo caso è il dissenso ad essere al centro della riflessione con una serie di foto scattate il 20 luglio a Genova. Un cammmino verso la libertà stretto e difficile, è il senso liberatorio messo in mostra attraverso la manifestazione e la repressione immortalata nei suoi scatti.
6. PACE: MASSIMO GRIMALDI, (Italia) 1010 foto di Igor's Pesce in Afghanistan, Apple cinema hd display da 23-inch apple power PC G5 dual da 2GHZ Con queste foto che scorrono dissolvendosi e riapparendo sullo schermo di un computer Apple di ultimissima generazione, l'artista ci mostra da una parte la bellezza della tecnologia e dall'altra la possibilità di servirsi di essa per mostrare i risultati di Emergency nella costruzione di un ospedale a Kabul. L'azione di pace è evidente in tutta la carrellata di immagini che scorrono e negli intenti che la sottendono.

INFERNO

1. DISPERAZIONE: MARCEL DZAMA e NEIL FARBER (Canada) Disegni sull'apocalisse: un centinaio di disegni surreali che raccontano la storia del giudizio universale. Una sorta di bestiario umano/animale in movimento, immagini in cui traspaiono un vitalismo macabro, una sorta di infinita danza della morte fatta di esseri mitologici in una narrazione che va dall'inizio dei tempi alla fine dei giorni, è la disperazione messa in scena dai due artisti canadesi.
2. DOLORE: RYAN MENDOZA (USA) Le opere dell'americano Mendoza sono quadri pittoricamente forti nei quali protagonista è una iconografia rappresentata a metà strada tra realismo e espressionismo. E' un lavoro sul corpo sofferente attraverso una penellata dal colore spesso e compatto che dà vita a immagini che entrano nella coscienza del visitatore catturato dalle rappresentazioni di uomini e donne colti mentre portano sofferenza e dolore come bagagli della loro esistenza.
3. MENZOGNA: PIETRO ROCCASALVA (Italia) Quadri e disegni. Pietro Roccasalva è un artista che fa dell'analisi della pittura il centro espressivo del suo lavoro e per questo evoca il senso della menzogna come qualità dell'opera. La pittura, infatti, non è mai realismo neanche quando viene stesa sulla sua superficie. Il fatto di non essere vero è la sua reale condanna: dalla notte dei tempi ci mette di fronte non al mondo, ma all'immagine del mondo.
4. ODIO: ROBERTO CUOGHI, (Italia) Quadri, opere pittoriche che raffigurano teschi psichedelici/espressionisti: ''memento mori'' del mondo globalizzato. La rappresentazione della morte avviene attraverso immagini che sembrano essere il risultato di un condensato iconografico di oriente (India) e occidente (Europa). E' l'Eurasia che si manifesta tramite i ritratti della morte, una morte che sorride di un'umanità a termine.
5. SOFFERENZA: DRAGANA SPANJOS (Croazia) Installazione. Artista che realizza sempre degli ambienti perfettamente congegnati dalla tecnologia e dalla manualità per dare vita a luoghi attivi e tesi a colpire lo spettatore dove e quando meno se lo aspetta. In questo caso l'artista realizza una sorta di ambiente ‘'polpaccio'' percorso da una serie di sensori che colpendo il visitatore alla gamba nella zona del polpaccio con una leggera scossa elettrica, gli procura un'esperienza dolorosa.
6. TERRORE: GINO DE DOMINICIS, (Italia) ''D'IO'' 1971: installazione sonora di risata che si diffonde nell'ambiente. La risata satanica dell'artista si diffonde nell'ambiente procurando disorientamento nello spettatore. In questo modo il terribile riso insegue lo spettatore per tutta la mostra senza dargli scampo.

Heaven & Hell - Paradiso & Inferno

Love, ecstasy, beauty, joy, freedom and peace. Yet also despair, pain, deceit, hate, suffering and terror. Heavenly sentiments and hellish frames of mind, reality united yet contrasted at the same time. Paradiso & Inferno is an attempt to show a journey through these contrasts, realised by 12 artists for the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation. Their selection came about by an intentional mixing of the youngest and the most established; famous international artists as well as emerging relative unknowns. Dragana Spanjos'sis a case in point, former student of the Venice Accademia, already part of the Foundation's own young artists' archive.
Paradiso & Inferno is an exhibition organised by Giacinto Di Pietrantonio, director of the Bergamo Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, and will be articulated in both of the Bevilacqua la Masa Foundation's two venues: the St. Mark's Square Gallery will stage Heaven, Palazzetto Tito will house hell. Each artist will tackle an issue connected with fear and to age-old human desires, those themes which are most suited to their own specific poetry.
Paradiso & Inferno will allow each artist a room in which to display one or more works which are relative to the proposed themes. The envisaged project is brushed by the shadow of Dante's cloak and is fully aware of its ambitious scope, certain that within this epoch of significant ethical changes one must have courage, as well as humility, in order to re-examine the grand themes of life.
The following is an outline of the proposed journey:

Paradiso - Heaven

LOVE: MIKE KELLEY (USA) Paintings made by covering the surface with hundreds of glued-on multi-coloured buttons. These surfaces become a series of festive planes and movement which expresses a joy of life obtained by using those simple everyday items that we carry around with us on our clothes, that first layer of artificial skin that we put around our body.
BEAUTY: ETTORE SPALLETTI (Italy) ''Three massive paintings of white and gold''. Beauty has always been the focus of Ettore Spalletti's work, with surfaces colourfully vibrating in pinks, blues, greens, yellows and whites and live together inside golden borders, which through abstract planes recall the world of painting from antiquity. Indeed they establish a relationship with the immaculate world of Beato Angelico and with Piero della Francesca's exacting perspective geometry, even the appropriated delicate finesse of Raffaello's draughtsmanship.
ECSTASY: DECOSTERD & RAHM (France) ''The good Smell of Christ, Artificial air'' is an scent spreading installation. A sculpture that descends from the ceiling like an upside-down fungus almost touching the ground, fills the surrounds with a gentle perfume: an ecstatic perfume which the creators, two architects, call ''The good Smell of Christ, Artificial air'' and is the arrival point for the installation. Thus they work upon credulity and the possibility of the miraculous whose actions are valid for those who believe in them, yet maintaining attentiveness to those that don't.
JOY: PATRICK TUTTOFUOCO (Italy) Eight luminous sculptures that resemble ''mini-skyscrapers'' occupy the room as if pieces from a chessboard and from which exits light and sound that pierce the space around, modifying one's perception. Through this work one can stabilise a relation between us, the art object and the space in a joyous action of positive interaction within a space that enables us to be placed inside the work in a total art experience.
FREEDOM: ARMIN LINKE, (Italy) ''G 8'', 2001: on display are photos from the G8 counter-demonstrations in Genova. Artistic freedom and our existing space in which we are able to demonstrate our thoughts, and that zone of our consciousness in which we are able to agree and disagree. Disagreement is central to our reflection here in a series of photographs taken on 20 July in Genova. A pass towards a narrow and difficult freedom, the sense of liberation in evidence throughout the demonstration as well as the repression immortalised through the photos.
PEACE: MASSIMO GRIMALDI, (Italy) 1010 photos of Igor's Pesce in Afghanistan, Apple cinema 23-inch display, with Apple power PC dual 2GHZ G5. Through the emerging and dissolving of photographs on the screen of a state-of-the-art latest generation Apple Mac, the artist demonstratrates on the one hand the beauty of technology and on the other the possibility to see the results of the Emergency organisation in building a hospital in Kabul. The demonstrations of peace is evident throughout the kaleidoscope of images that pass as well as in the intentions that underlie them.

Hell - Inferno

DESPAIR: MARCEL DZAMA and NEIL FARBER (Canada) Drawings on the theme of the apocalypse: around one hundred surreal drawings that recount the story of the day of judgement. A type of moving human/animal bestiary, images in which a macabre vitality transpires, a sort of dance of death made up of mythological beings within a narrative which opens at the start of time and finishes in the final days, it is utter despair which the two Canadian artists offer here.
PAIN: RYAN MENDOZA (USA) Mendoza creates pictorially strong paintings in which the protagonist is an icon represented half way between realism and expressionism. The work is based on the suffering body. He uses a palette of thick and compact colour that manages to give life to images which enter into the viewers conscience who are captured by the representation of learned men and women while they carry the burden of pain and suffering as if it were the baggage of their existence.
DECEIT: PIETRO ROCCASALVA (Italy) Paintings and drawings. Pietro Roccasalva is an artist for whom the analysis of painting is the expressive centre of his work and thereby he evokes the meaning of deceit as the quality of the work. Painting, indeed, is never realism even when realism itself is upon its surface. The fact of not being true is it's own condemnation: from the dim and distant past one has never been placed in front of the world but in front of the image of the world.
HATE: ROBERTO CUOGHI, (Italy) Painting, pictorial works which portray psycodelic/expressionist skulls: ''death mementoes'' from a globalised world. The representation of death is brought through images that seem to be the result of a condensation of oriental (India) and occidental (Europe). It is Eurasia that emerges through these portraits of death, a death which smiles upon the end of humanity.
SUFFERING: DRAGANA SPANJOS (Croatia) Installation. An artist who realises mechanised environments through technology or manually operated apparatus to animate the space, ready to catch the visitor when one least expects it. In this case the artist creates a sort of ''calf muscle'' environment, a route through a series of sensors which strike the visitor in the legs around the calf with a small electric shock, an experience of pain is offered.
TERROR: GINO DE DOMINICIS, (Italy) ''D'IO'' 1971: Sound installation of laughter which diffuses into the surroundings. The artist's satanic laughter spreads throughout the ambient causing disorientation for the visitor. Thus the terrible laugh follows the visitor throughout the exhibition and there is no way to escape.
