The Joan Miró Foundation presents Exhibition, an installation by Simon Starling (Epsom, England, 1967) produced specifically for the Espai 13, based on two of the themes with which he is most concerned: state-of-the-art technology and the developments of the Modern Movement.

The title Exhibition refers to the 1929 International Exhibition in Barcelona, on Montjuïc, which was a real showcase of technological progress and German design of the period.

Three identical photographs show the engineering display in the German pavilion, designed by Lilly Reich, an architect trained at the Bauhaus and a collaborator of Mies van der Rohe. The photographs are platinum prints. The source of energy for the lighting for these photographs is a prototype electric generator developed by Ballard for Daimler Chrysler, based on hydrogen, which also uses platinum as a catalyser for the reaction that produces the energy.

The two elements – photographs and generator – are separated but also linked by a slightly curved, smoked-glass platform that acts as a translucent mirror, the form of which appropriates the designs produced by Lilly Reich for the Barcelona exhibition.

Simon Starling's work is normally based on meticulous research in order to create surprising juxtapositions that often raise questions concerning cultural values in relation to the past and to our present.

In this case, by juxtaposing two historical moments – 1929 and the present day – in a single location – the mountain of Montjuïc – he demonstrates on the one hand the failure of the utopias of the Modern Movement, whose aesthetic has come down to us stripped of the ideological impulse that gave birth to it, and on the other hand the difficulties involved in implementing alternative forms of energy.
