On Thursday 6th May 2004 Yoko Ono will attend the Irish Museum of Modern Art and officially open one of the most exciting exhibitions of contemporary new Irish art to go on show in recent years. 'In the time of shaking' is a sale, exhibition and book involving over 100 of Ireland's leading artists in support of human rights and the work of Amnesty International.

Art for Amnesty, in association with Amnesty International and with the support of the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), Bank of Ireland Private Banking and IBI Corporate Finance, are pleased to announce In the time of shaking, one of the most exciting exhibitions of contemporary Irish art in recent years, in support of Amnesty International.

In the time of shaking will present many new works by more than a hundred of Ireland's most important contemporary artists, including Louis le Brocquy, Patrick Scott, Camille Souter, Sean Scully, Tony O'Malley, Barrie Cooke, Patrick Ireland, Patrick O'Reilly, Anne Madden, Mark Francis, Jane O'Malley, Basil Blackshaw, Hughie O'Donoghue, Alice Maher, Carey Clarke, Guggi, Dorothy Cross, Michael Kane, Grace Weir, Felim Egan, Vivienne Roche, Maud Cotter, Cecily Brennan and Clare Langan.

In the time of shaking has been conceived and selected by Professor Ciarán Benson of University College Dublin, and members of the 'Artists for Amnesty International 2004' Committee supported by Art for Amnesty. In a specially commissioned essay Ciarán Benson explains the title to the show as follows:

'I take the show's title – In the time of shaking – from a phrase I remembered and liked in an old translation of Psalm 27. 'Shaking' is a metaphor for 'trouble'. The question that then occurs is this: in the time of shaking to what can we turn for support and guidance? And the answer that inspires this show is: to a vision of common humanity such as is asserted in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and to the endlessly rich versions of that common humanity in their fullest expression, such as we find in the arts.'

Art sale
The works will go on sale to the public on Wednesday 21 April 2004 at 10 am, when the official website (http://www.artforamnesty.org/shaking) goes live*. All works may be viewed on this website which also provides details on how to purchase. Due to the quality of the work and the historic nature of this event, demand is expected to be high and the works will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. The sale of the works will provide a unique opportunity to acquire exciting new Irish art while simultaneously supporting Amnesty International in its work for human rights worldwide.

* NOTE – A promotional website is now live on providing basic information however the full website with all works will go live on the 21st April. This will allow site visitors to view each piece of work in the collection.

Exhibition at IMMA
The works will be exhibited in the East Wing of the Irish Museum of Modern Art from Friday 7th May until Sunday 23rd May 2004. Admission is free, and the Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10.00am – 5.30pm and on Sundays, 12.00-5.30 pm.

Book
The limited edition 292 page book is beautifully printed and bound in hardback. Designed by Ciarán ÓGaora, the book features full colour reproductions of all of the works, an essay by Professor Ciarán Benson, a new poem by Derek Mahon and biographies of all the artists. A limited edition of 3,000 are available for purchase through Art for Amnesty for euro45.

Art for Amnesty is an international initiative, based in Dublin, that harnesses the goodwill and support of artists of all disciplines from around the world in major fundraising projects for the benefit of Amnesty International.
