'KARSTEN HÖLLER'

Carsten Höller's second solo exhibition at the Casey Kaplan gallery, 'KARSTEN HÖLLER', is a large scale installation of diverse works which operates on one of the most rudimentary of human emotions, namely, confusion. In the gallery, a large, steel, aluminum, and mirrored glass structure entitled Revolving Doors is installed with a series of twelve framed color photogravures, entitled Mushroom Prints.

Revolving Doors investigates the notion of doubt as a means of enlarging experience. This stationary yet versatile 6-1/2' tall x 15-1/2' wide pentagonal framework houses five sets of double-sided glass-mirrored revolving doors, which expose the viewer to multiple reflections. The doors spin manually in either direction, allowing a viewer to enter the structure's center where he may unexpectedly encounter other visitors. It is possible for the viewer to see his reflection from all angles, while another person may 'walk through' the subject's panopticum of selves.

Revolving Doors is a device like those described by Baldo Hauser 'to produce a peculiar state of the mind, a loss of orientation, a kind of perplexity of not knowing what to do, a reduced ability to maneuver while, at the same time, experiencing joyful, happy, self-sufficient, purified, introspective feelings.²

Mushroom Prints is a series of 12 color photogravures depicting different fly agaric mushrooms in a natural environment. Each photogravure has been printed by super imposing one image of the source onto another of the same source, with a shift of placement and color. This process creates a dreamlike three-dimensional sensation of depth.

As the title of the exhibition suggests, the ³double nature² of Höller's work strives to question the supposed singularity of the original. This concept relates to recent works by the German artist such as: Sliding Doors, an installation created for the exhibition 'Common Wealth,' at Tate Modern in London; Y, exhibited in 'Delays & Revolutions' in the Italian Pavilion at the 50th Venice Biennale; Neon Circle, exhibited at the 7th Biennale d¹Art Contemporain de Lyon, the opening exhibition of the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, UK, and Höller¹s last gallery show in New York; Upside-Down Mushroom Room and Light Wall, both included in Höller¹s solo show 'Register' at the Fondazione Prada in Milan.

Carsten Höller's forthcoming exhibition at Musée d¹Arte Contemporain in Marseille will include twelve works that reflect the architectural symmetry of the museum by creating each artwork twofold. The artist's work will also be featured in the ' 2004 Carnegie International' at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. Since Höller's last solo exhibition in New York in 2002, additional one-person exhibitions of the artist include ' One Day One Day ' at Färgfabriken in Stockholm; ' Half Fiction ' at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in Boston; and 'Light Wall,' at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
