comunicato stampa

Matthew Marks is pleased to announce Deliver Us from Evil, the next exhibition in his gallery at 523 West 24th Street.

This exhibition includes works on paper by Honoré Daumier, R. Crumb, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Dr. Lakra, and Keegan McHargue. Made by artists for whom drawing plays a key role, the works in the exhibition display an enormously varied line but all share an investment in questioning and subverting social norms in ways that range from caricature to escapism.

The exhibition will include a group of more than twenty prints by Honoré Daumier, including several rare hand-colored modèles, original examples prepared for the edition. These 19th-century images of Parisian daily life are classic caricatures, lampooning the bourgeoisie. Though the politics of Daumier's work are not always topical 150 years later, one can never miss his superior draughtsmanship.

Over 25 drawings made between 1960 and the present by another superior draughtsman, R. Crumb, will also be included. Crumb's work has been enormously original and influential ever since it first emerged in the underground comic scene in the late 1960s.

Jake & Dinos Chapman will debut a series of 21 hand-colored etchings entitled My Giant Coloring Book, their first exhibition of new work in New York in four years. The first series of hand-colored etchings the Chapmans made was inspired by Goya's Disaster of War; for this new series, they have taken a children's color-by-numbers book and superimposed their own twisted forms of a world gone wrong, the demons of children's nightmares, creating powerful images that are at once grotesque and amusing.

This will be the first New York exhibition of the work of the Mexican artist Dr. Lakra (born 1972). Dr. Lakra, who has supported himself as a tattoo artist, makes intricate drawings on top of pages torn from old magazines and other found objects. He covers these with images derived from folk art, traditional tattoo art, and designs of his own making.

The exhibition will also include three new graphite drawings, one measuring over seven feet, by
San Francisco-based artist Keegan McHargue (born 1983). Creating images of mutant figures and animals in a strangely patterned world, the artist's work draws on an Outsider Art aesthetic and often seems to reference tribal myth, the groupings of masked figures hinting at unnamed and often illegible ceremonial practice.

Deliver Us from Evil will be on view at Matthew Marks Gallery, 523 West 24th Street (between 10th and 11th Avenues), through August 20th, 2004. Hours: Monday through Friday, 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.

For further information or reproductions, please contact Sabrina Buell at 212-243-0200.

Opening: July 7th from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.
