For the fall season, Rena Bransten Gallery (77 Geary Street, San Francisco, CA 94108) will open with exhibitions of photographs by Stéphane Couturier and sculptures and drawings by Robert Wilson. Both artists rely upon "the familiar" to startle and invite viewers to take a closer look at their works.

Stéphane Couturier photographs building sites all over the world that, except for the vegetation or lack of it, could be anywhere - in the world. His vision is not about the specificity of place as much as an investigation of the relationship between the different focal points of the picture. The anonymity of some of the partially built structures and the homogeneity of architecture in others offer few points of distinction or aesthetic interest. Rather, the structures, construction sites, and backgrounds become geometric details in the larger scene that is more visually coherent as a whole entity. Only when considered in this way do the details come alive, giving the photographs a sense of almost geometric beauty and balance.

Robert Wilson is described in his Vision catalogue from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts as "one of the most creative forces in ... art and theater of the last two decades. He has fused the roles of director and designer in a highly visual approach that gives formal independence to the elements of light, space, and sound." Our show will include some of his most famous chair sculptures and drawings from various productions and will correspond to the American Conservatory Theater's September 1st through September 26th production of "The Black Rider". Wilson's last San Francisco exhibition was at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1991.

Dates: September 9 through October 16, 2004
