comunicato stampa

The Museum Ludwig will show a comprehensive retrospective of the American painter Edward Hopper (1882-1967) from October 2004 to January 2005. His work is amongst the best-known and most important works of American 20th century art. Pictures such as “Nighthawks” from the Chicago Art Institute have become icons of modern painting. The exhibition of approx. seventy paintings contains important loans from American museums and private collectors. Hopper’s unsparing realism determined the image of America. Loneliness and self-observation are the main themes in his painting. His most famous painting “Nighthawks” will be represented in the exhibition, together with his paintings of lighthouses and the rough countryside of New England. Some of the works, such as “Gas”, which pictures a gas station, contain elements that could later be found in Pop Art. The exhibition is one of a series of large-scale projects planned by the Museum Ludwig for the coming year and the following year. The project will present top quality exhibitions featuring classical and late modernism, and will include the “Blaue Reiter” collection from the Lenbachhaus, as well as a Richard Hamilton retrospective. Edward Hopper fits historically into this series. His imagery reached its peak of maturity in the 30s and 40s, as a combination of, and preparation for, the important developments in American art in the 50s and 60s – Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. Both movements make up large sections of the permanent collection of the Museum Ludwig. The exhibition is being organized in co-operation with the Tate Modern, London. Cologne is the only place other than London where this retrospective will be shown.
