One of the most ambitious exhibitions of international contemporary artworks ever to be mounted in Scotland, featuring works from the French Regional Art Collections (FRACs) that provide an invaluable record of the history of contemporary art will be launched on Friday 15 October by Deputy First Minister The Right Honourable Jim Wallace QC MSP, Minister for Enterprise and Lifelong Learning and Leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats.
The exhibition, Somewhere Everywhere Nowhere, Collections san Frontières III, Contemporary art from the FRACs du Grand Est, is the first joint-venue collaboration between Scotland’s leading public art spaces and runs until 28 November at The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh, and until 4 December at Dundee Contemporary Arts.
Presenting works of painting, photography, sculpture and video that explore notions of place and space, Somewhere Everywhere Nowhere is a major event in the United Kingdom’s centenary anniversary celebrations that commemorate the British – Franco cultural alliance, the signing of the Entente Cordiale agreement by France and the UK on April 8,1904.
More than 50 artworks – some of which have never before been seen in the UK - represent major artists including Lothar Baumgarten (Germany), Alighiero e Boetti (Italy), Martin Boyce (Scotland), Willie Doherty (Northern Ireland), Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster (France), Douglas Gordon (Scotland), Pierre Huyghe (France), Thomas Struth (Germany), Hiroshi Sugimoto (Japan) and Jeff Wall (Canada).
Established in 1983, the FRACs collect, commission and present the art of our times within 23 regional collections that include over 15,000 works made by more than 3000 artists. The works in Somewhere Everywhere Nowhere have been selected from holdings of the FRACs du Grand Est, the collections of Alsace, Bourgogne, Champagne-Ardenne, Franche-Comté and Lorraine in eastern France.
