Wanderers, Italian artists offer a free ride through different landscape curated by Angela Serino

Among the special programmes of the next Impakt Festival -27/31 October 2004- there is "Wanderers", a collection of film and video works made by Alice Guareschi, Bianco-Valente/Mass, Ottonella Mocellin e Nicola Pellegrini, Sara Rossi, Deborah Ligorio, Margherita Morgantin,Alessandra Arno', Italo Zuffi and Ra Di Martino.

“Wanderers” is a collection of Italian film and video works, in which natural and urban landscapes are not just used as neutral ‘background’, but play an active role in the development of the narration and the characters.
Whether 3D animations, images of the countryside or shots of factories, the landscape is never simply a setting for actions and atmospheres. It offers, on the contrary, important elements that contribute to personal stories of love, relationships and friendship; or elements that are part of artificial situations dealing with the more public aspects of life. This approach leads to interesting narrative strategies and artistic works in which each image strongly expresses the imagination and personality of the author. Finally, “Wanderers” presents a variety of landscape portraits, far from the more touristic and stereotyped images of Italy.

Wanderers Program

1-Private Anthology
Alice Guareschi (Italy, 2002-2004, video, 29:00 min)
This video is the personal diary of the artist, made out of notes and images. It is a work in progress made of endless modules. The exact selection and running order of the modules can change according to the context of the exhibition or the artist’s mood. The version shown here is composed of four parts: (1) introduction + (2) ‘Racconto d’inverno #1. A walk’(2002) + (3) introduction + (4) ‘Racconto d’inverno #2. Sleepwalking’(2004).

2-Fortify My Arms
Giovanna Bianco and Pino Valente (Italy, 2004, video, 3:00 min)
The work of Bianco-Valente/Mass focuses on the phenomena of perception and processes in the human brain, which enables us to imagine things and retain memories of our experiences. In the case of this video, distorted vision, altered colours and an obsessive rhythmical soundtrack suggest a dialogue between the outside world of the nature and the personal dimension of intimacy.

3-Hurt So Good
Ottonella Mocellin and Nicola Pellegrini (Italy, 1999, video, 4:00 min)
Can love be dangerous for our self-esteem? And up to what point? In this video the artists’ play in the water is a clear metaphor of the opposite feelings that can grow in a love relationship, and how hard it can be to keep a balance between ourselves and the other.

4-Le Cocu Magnifique
Sara Rossi (Italy, 2003, 16 mm, 8:00 min)
Strange characters often inhabit the works of Sara Rossi: they are heroic figures taken from Italian folk tales and popular culture. Rossi takes them out of this context and places them in new surroundings, mixing objective documentary and fantasy styles. In this case the protagonist is Pulcinella, a well-known character from the Commedia dell'arte. He is equipped with a special suitcase and a stereoscopic mask and takes the spectator on a fantastic trip to the beginning of the history of cinema.

5-Landscape
Deborah Ligorio (Italy, 2002, Video, 5:00 min)
3D-animated images and satellite pictures of he earth are used to reflect on the relation between order and disorder, between structure and chaos. With ‘Landscape’ Ligorio wants to show us the potential of errors and imperfections.

6-Petrol Swing
Margherita Morgantin (Italy, 2002, video, 6:00 min)
Inspired by an abandoned printing factory, the artist creates a dance, together with the former workers of the factory. Images of big empty rooms, internal stairs and old machineries are mixed with shots of the nearby seaside. ‘Petrol Swing’ is a light-hearted video that tries to offer a different perspective on social problems.

7-One shot
Alessandra Arnò (Italy, 2003, Video, 1:00 min)
A dynamic play of images is created, starting from the courtyard of a historical building.

8-Shaking Giles
Italo Zuffi (Italy, 2003, Video, 5:00 min)
Here we are led from exterior to interior, from the street, into a house, into a room. At the end, the unstable and shaking environment leaves us with a strong feeling of instability and danger.

9-Not 360
Ra Di Martino (Italy, 2002, 16 mm, 7:00 min)
A film scene is shot on the top of a hill. The camera slowly turns to show the viewer different characters talking. As the time passes we start to realize the incoherence of the actors' dialogue and the absurdity of the situation. 'Not 360' is an ironic, intelligent work on film language.

Wanderers is curated by Angela Serino, in collaboration with Careof, Milan
