Eduardo Paolozzi: Prints
Rachel Whiteread: Etchings

On 1 November, Yorkshire Sculpture Park launches two new displays in the YSP Centre. A display of ninety prints by Eduardo Paolozzi will be mounted in the YSP restaurant, whilst the YSP concourse features a series of five etchings, Untitled (nets) 2002, by Rachel Whiteread.

Eduardo Paolozzi (b.1924) makes work which abounds with energy and inventiveness, extending Surrealist ideas and merging them with concerns of everyday culture. This display is from three series of graphic works in the YSP collection: General Dynamic FUN, Moonstrip Empire News and Bunk. All stand as pictorial sourcebooks which reveal the underbelly of post-war history through its adverts, movies, toys, magazines, packaging and emerging technology. Paolozzi’s collage technique and vibrant designs transform the ordinary into something remarkable. This display is timed to mark Paolozzi’s 80th birthday celebrated this year.

Rachel Whiteread is fascinated by lost form casting, a process in which the original object is destroyed. The display of metal etchings on the YSP concourse continues her exploration of positive and negative spaces; solidity and emptiness. It is not clear if the metal is a chosen object, or the discarded residue of something cut and used elsewhere.

The different layers of Whiteread’s work shift into the foreground and this uncertainty brings a sense of unease. Each work has a different density of metal, some with areas deliberately broken, compounding the fragility of definition.
