Ed Ruscha

Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh

Perhaps more than any other artist, Ed Ruscha has captured the cool spirit of the modern American West, and of Los Angeles in particular. Equally important to Ruscha as this car-seat view of the world was the impact of film. Many of his works reflect the way that credits appear; indeed, the show includes a whole group of works that deal with the final word on a film - 'The End'. This retrospective of his drawings, books and photographs, includes a group of recent paintings.

comunicato stampa

Perhaps more than any other artist, Ed Ruscha has captured the cool spirit of the modern American West, and of Los Angeles in particular.

In 1956 he took the now almost mythical Route 66 from Oklahoma City (his childhood home) to LA, where he was to study commercial art. His experiences of the wide-open landscape and man-made billboards had a lasting impact on his work. Paintings and drawings of words set against a largely empty, coloured background and landscapes, became central to his work.

Edinburgh is the only UK venue for this exhibition which has been shown to great acclaim in Sydney and Rome.

"...photographs of car parks and Los Angeles streets, pop-inspired paintings of objects and words, silhouette paintings, aerial views of intersections and place names, and paintings of text superimposed on panoramic mountain views." The Sydney Morning Herald

"...th[is] artist has garnered a celebrity persona that mirrors the image of Los Angeles itself. Think of Dennis Hopper's gorgeous photograph of the artist in three-quarter profile...and more recently, David Stephenson and Richard Bell's musical tribute, I want to hang out with Ed Ruscha 2000. And finally, consider Kent Twichell's Ed Ruscha Monument 1978-87 on South Hill Street, Los Angeles (a 70 foot portrait of Ruscha staring blankly towards the city's downtown)". Art Monthly Australia
