Running Through History

Is an exhibit of Luvaas' video pieces, video composites and oil paintings. Luvaas' work is timely and provocative- asking questions of the past that resonate with today's often volatile world. Luvaas wants to investigate history, hoping to connect with past events in a more meaningful way. When examining her work it is impossible not to make connections with today's current events and our own roles in history.

Luvaas states:
'The only way that history can resonate for us as individuals is if we can experience, empathize, or in some way personally 'be' in the period we are learning about: we must absorb the atmosphere of the times we¹re investigating in order to truly appreciate them.

'For several years, I¹ve been thinking about exploring history as a subject for my work, but didn¹t really have a handle on how to approach it.

'I started working on a video called, 'Running Through History,' wanting to use myself as a witness, as a sort of voyeur/observer--running through the passage of time; through varied scenes that contain meaning for me personally, as well as scenes that are pertinent to our history as a nation, as a people, and finally, as a world.

'The videos inspire imagery for the painted works as well as the other way around.

'I use varied methods to create the painted works. One is to create video composites made from clips in the movie, enlarge them and then use the imagery for mixed media paintings. Another, is to make stencils of the imagery and create imprints on the wooden panels. Currently, I¹m doing the drawings and paintings before I start working on the video--planning to use some of the painted imagery in the film.

'In addition, I compose the sound and music for the videos.' Lucinda Luvaas will be featured in an artist talk on Saturday December 4 at 'pm. Luvaas will conduct a slide show and viewing of the three short films that accompany the exhibit, "Running Through History" (Parts I, II and III) at the Cal Poly Pomona Downtown Center Theater. A discussion of the work with Luvaas will conclude the artist talk.

Multimedia artist Lucinda Luvaas has a long history of composite installations including video, murals, oil paintings, sculpture and performance pieces. She exhibits nationally and internationally and has an extensive body of work. Luvaas is also the Director of the Mt. San Jacinto College's Fine Art Gallery.
