Steinless

Brooklyn Fire Proof, New York

Alexander Stein transforms the gallery with his numerous 'studies', small mixed media graphite drawings on mylar mixed with oil paint that seemingly border on collage. Old magazine covers and discarded advertisements are often used as backdrops for Stein's minute careful sketches and meticulous cutouts.

comunicato stampa

Burr Dodd’s Mistaken Conception of Alex Stein

”I won’t pretend to fully understand Alex Stein’s work. Many times I need him to explain what lies atop the mylar, paper or magazine clipping. When he does explain, strangely accurately rendered objects are revealed. All of Alex’s work contains bizarre relations and moments most of us would simply wave off as insignificant. Not Alex. With obsessive intensity he renders moments of his life and pieces of his mind. Welcome to Steinless...”

Brooklyn Fire Proof, Inc. presents Steinless, Alexander Stein’s second solo exhibition at Brooklyn Fire Proof, Inc. Stein fills every wall space with his dreamlike images and nightmares. A solid black mural strategically placed at the gallery entry perhaps echoes passage into the entrails of Stein’s dark mind. Stein transforms the gallery with his numerous “studies,” small mixed media graphite drawings on mylar mixed with oil paint that seemingly border on collage. Old magazine covers and discarded advertisements are often used as backdrops for Stein’s minute careful sketches and meticulous cutouts.

Rather than a singular theme, Steinless consists of several sub plots relevant to his life work and own personal message. The gallery is organized into sub sections, with each wall reflecting different manners or time periods in Stein’s career, past and present. Figurative works hang on a wall entitled “Those Kinds of Figure Drawings Everyone Does” while “High school” Wall displays choice works from Stein’s young adult life. And the “Schadenfreude Room” encompasses a shroud of gloom.
