comunicato stampa

Plane Space is pleased to present new installation work by Claudia Schmacke. This exhibition, Schmacke's second solo show at the gallery, will open Thursday, May 12th, to be viewed through Sunday, June 12th. A reception for the artist will be held Thursday evening, May 12th, from 6 to 8 p.m.

With this new installation, Schmacke will continue her ongoing investigation with water. Through deposits of water in clear plastic bags covering the majority of the gallery's floor space, the emphasis will lie in the fragility and tension of the thin plastic bags retention of its liquid contents. As a result, the viewer must negotiate the space gingerly to both experience the piece and avoid disrupting the delicate containments.

Born and raised in Germany, Schmacke earned her M.F.A. from the Kunstakademie Dorf. In addition to exhibition consistently and extensively through solo and group shows in Germany, Schmacke's work has been presented in Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, France, Norway, Poland and the United States. Schmacke has had residencies at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas, the Bemis Foundation in Omaha, Nebraska, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council in New York, and Smack-Mellon Studios in Brooklyn. Since her New York solo debut at Plane Space in 2003, Schmacke has, among other exhibitions, had a solo show at the Goethe Institute in Brazil and was most recently the critic's choice in the First International Lodz Biennale in Poland.

Opening Reception: Thursday, May 12th, 68 p.m.
