Anton

Medusa Art Gallery, Athens

In the last two years and while continuing to explore the potential of photographic representation and creation, the artist has returned to 'pure' painting; more recently he has been practising a particular type of geometric abstraction which borders on the metaphysical and questions the traditional perspective perception of space.

In search of another dimension

Anton was born in Athens in 1948, and he lives and works in Paris since 1965. He studied architecture at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts (ΕΝSΒΑ) in Paris (grad. 1972) and received his Maitrise in Urban Planning from the Universite Paris VIII in 1973. He also attended classes in painting (ΕΝSΒΑ), cinema (Paris VIII ), video and photography (UERE).

Before his professional engagement in painting he worked for many years as an architect, and at the same time he painted, designed various objects (the AHA group was formed on his initiative) and created comics, video and music. He has worked with Nikos Kessanlis, Iasson Molfessis and other Greek and foreign artists.

After an initial semi-figurative period (approx. 1973-1985) with the emphasis on purely painterly media, Anton turned to abstraction (or "glided into it", as he says); around 1991 he returned to representation, but this time he used the "chemistry of photography" to process his images. All works of this period, created on paper with more or less pronounced painterly intervention (addition of colour, words, graffiti, etc.) retain clearly the traces of their photographic origin while establishing a poetic discourse among their multiple components and at the same time revealing a critical view of their social, 'environmental' surroundings.

In the last two years and while continuing to explore the potential of photographic representation and creation, Anton has returned to 'pure' painting (aquarelles or small-scale gouaches; large 'reformative' compositions); more recently he has been practising a particular type of geometric abstraction which borders on the metaphysical, with many elements of illusion, and questions the traditional, perspective perception of space.
