Sabrina Mezzaqui

One Severn Street, Birmingham

The exhibition presents two new works; 'Eppure', a mesmerising double screen projection, and 'Abbandono', which plays off the architectural space of the gallery. These are combined with a selection of works from the last three years, providing an insight into the artist's recent practice.

comunicato stampa

Solo show

One Severn Street is pleased to announce the first presentation of work in the UK by Italian artist Sabrina Mezzaqui. Video has been Mezzaqui’s primary medium in recent years, focusing on detail from everyday occurrences and repeated gestures. Her work inhabits a poetic world of intimacy and imbues a spiritual resonance, leading the viewer to a state of contemplation.

For One Severn Street, Mezzaqui presents two new works; ‘Eppure’, 2005 - a mesmerising double screen projection, and ‘Abbandono’, 2004 which plays off the architectural space at One Severn Street. These are combined with a selection of works from the last three years, providing an insight into Mezzaqui’s recent practice.

‘Campo Sportivo’ is filmed during the night and witnesses the silent downpour of snow across a sport ground. Shot from a fixed viewpoint, the camera does not explore the scene but instead leaves the viewer to reflect and imagine. In ‘Case Gialle’, 2002, flat planes of colour provide ledges on which swallows perch, interrupted by a constant re-shuffling as they reconfigure their precarious positions and nest down for the night. In many ways these works epitomise Mezzaqui’s practice, in that they highlight the profundity of a simple, unrefined moment.

One Severn Street is a new, temporary project space for Birmingham dedicated to the presentation of artists’ film and video. Saki Satom (Japan), Sabrina Mezzaqui (Italy) and Anna Lucas (UK) have been invited to exhibit new and previously unseen video works in a sequence of three solo exhibitions, running from April – July 2005.

The exhibition is supported by Arts Council England and The Mailbox, Birmingham.

Preview: Friday 20 May 2005, 6 - 8pm.
