Asleep, dreaming of reptilian glory

Blum & Poe is pleased to present a new exhibition by Tokyo based artist Chiho Aoshima. Asleep, dreaming of reptilian glory will mark her second solo exhibition at the gallery.

Reflecting the complexities between civilization and nature Asleep, dreaming of reptilian glory continues to translate Aoshima’s resourceful ideas about the fundamental meaning of life on earth. Rooted in the tradition of drawing and based on images she generates on her computer, the works in the exhibition are the result of the usage of diverse technologies.

The main gallery will be comprised of nine new chromogenic prints and Aoshima’s first sculpture, giving form to the aesthetic content of her imagery. The exhibition will also premiere the first video installation of Aoshima’s vision—an animation collaboration with film director Bruce Ferguson.

The second gallery of Asleep, dreaming of reptilian glory will be covered entirely with an apocalyptic four-wall mural and floor installation personifying strands of her thoughts that seem to have flown around the universe before returning to be materialized.

Concurrently to the exhibition at Blum & Poe, Aoshima’s works are on view in the exhibition Little Boy: The Arts of Japan's Exploding Subculture, curated by Takashi Murakami at the Japan Society in New York from April 8-July 24, 2005. Organized in collaboration with the New York Public Art Fund the series City Glow and Paradise are on view throughout the month of May as mural installations in Union Square Subway Station, New York.

Chiho Aoshima was born in 1974 in Tokyo. She graduated from the Department of Economics at Hosei University in Tokyo in 1995. Aoshima is a member of Takashi Murakami’s Kaikai Kiki studio in Japan.
