Curated by Guido Bartorelli

The things are there, Bittente draws them

The work of Alvise Bittente still holds a trace of that attitude for relating to the world by copying it which gave great artistic glories to his Venice. Fundamentally he works like a painter of vedutas, one who sits down in front of a slice of reality in order to manually transcribe it. That this slice of reality no longer encompasses the sumptuous perspectives of piazzas, palazzi and canals left to us by Canaletto and his companions, but that it has become very small, a tiny crumb made of a single object, is a sign of our times. I remember Bittente together with other artists a few years ago, at a performance of painting from life in the monumental square in Faenza. He was the only one who was copying what was in front of him, but turning his back on the square unfolding its multicoloured richness of life, he had fixed on immortalising an insignificant detail, if not even an unbecoming one: a rubbish bin.
In parallel Bittente’s vedutas distain the painterly texture of shadow, shade and various details through which the objects appear to us. Only the ghost of a subtle line remains of the pulp of things, which delineates the icon with the slightest movement and a dancing step. The object is sublimed into a stylised form, light, impalpable, reduced to the mere nothing of a black trace on paper. In a way it is the revelation of its essence. As long as it is not read in a metaphysical way: if anything one could call into play those essences, if you want to call them that, which are minimal visual symbols, but at the same time exquisite and very evident, dreamt up by mass communication to present this or that product. They are the icons of advertising images, or maybe of an instruction book.
However, this does not mean that Bittente’s work is totally indifferent to painterly values, above all colour. Large empty spaces open up between the loose mesh of the drawings, which lend themselves to being filled up with the application of some type of coating, some sort of “skin”. In the past this generally meant colouring certain areas with the ethereal and stereotyped yellow of a highlighter pen. This time Bittente has dug up the illustrious technique of papier collé, sticking down decorated wall paper textiles as a background, materials with a taste that is overwhelmingly kitsch and unfashionable. We are still, more than ever, in the area of stereotypes and artifice, with the consequence that the degree of immateriality of the image grows.
Thus emptied of consistence and without any vertical movement towards the transcendent, the drawing lends itself to the grafting of a very ingenious and witty conceptual verve, the realm of mental associations of one who has the gift of lightness which allows them to see the world upside down, and the establishing of a logic of paradox. Verbal means are the tools of choice for expressing thoughts, and Bittente, also showing a remarkable literary talent, makes the most use of the narrow space of the title to concentrate delicious word games and other flashes of “wise madness”. Looking at these things closer, it seems to me that the true nature of Bittente’s work is truly that of conceptual art: indeed, how many of the best conceptual artists, whilst distaining the paint brush, ever gave up the pencil? An amused and undisciplined kind of conceptual, which sweeps away the inertia of objects with a breath of “fine thinking”.
De rebus domesticis, seu affectuum lascivissimae picturae, that is Of the domestic, or the pornography of feelings is directed at the kitchen, concentrating on the kitchen tools which support by now ritual actions and which are unexpectedly revealed to be soaked in brazen sexual meanings. Again in this case the perceptive reporting of Bittente is anything but exceptional: corks, cutting boards, pans, knives, ladles, spoons, plungers, cups, brushes, aprons and so on. Things, in short. Things that pass through our experience several times a day, constituting a rebound, a sweet and tenacious framework for our actions. Such is the normalness of the relationship between us and them that in the end they seem to be psychologically nothing for us. In truth they are agitated by a widespread and deep-rooted excitement, constant like background noise, such as to be imperceptible, albeit active and powerful. It is the perceiving of things whilst in symbiosis with them, whose course is flat not because it is absent but because it is without emotional ups and downs.
These drawings of things do not celebrate the victory of apathy, of the brute inertia of artifice. Quite the opposite: they sanction the dilation of subjectivity, which is poured over the objects, it encompasses them, it takes them into the stream of conscience, it makes them a launching ramp for the most fearless evolutions. We are in the unreal territory of dreams, memory and affection. And obviously in first place, the component which drives the majority of psychological activity bursts out: the sexual-emotional imagination. This explains the devotion of the housewife, who in handling pots and pans can give herself a sublimated and finally rewarding eroticism, with the same rapture of an opera heroine abandoning herself to the arms of her lover.
