Selective Memory

Selective Memory is the title of the project developed by curators Jason E. Bowman and Rachel Bradley for the second representation of contemporary art from Scotland at the Venice Biennale in 2005.

This exhibition will focus on the individual practices of Alex Pollard and Cathy Wilkes and the collaborative practice of Joanne Tatham and Tom O'Sullivan. The exhibition represents the work of three practices which reflect an interest in the pursuit and construction of meaning through studio-based and practice-led activities.

Ranging from the application of vernacular and marginalised languages to re-focussing attention on neglected feminist symbolic languages to establishing re-occurring visual motifs, these artists are genuinely concerned with examining the construction of meaning as a significant act of artistic labour.

The exhibition at the Venice Biennale will be held in a newly renovated space, a "scoletta" (small school) on Campo San Rocco, in the San Polo district amongst several of Venice's must-see attractions. The Biennale audiences will be able to view ´Selective Memory´ and encounter existing and newly commissioned works by each of the three practices next door to the Scuola Grande di San Rocco which houses 50 original paintings by the renaissance painter, Tintoretto.
