Titel Illustrations spanning five Decades
Leading international illustrators have been designing the covers for one of the leading European weeklies: »clever, without being elitist, and humorous, without spoiling a serious topic« (Walter Grasskamp).
The exhibition will present, for the first time, around 200 original illustrations commissioned by DER SPIEGEL from 60 artists, aside from those for the magazine covers - for example by Michael Matthias Prechtl, Nancy Stahl, Braldt Bralds, Ludvik Glazer-Nandé, Rafal Olbinski among others. The exhibition will offer not only an unusual look into cultural and modern-day history, but also a rich cross-section of contemporary applied graphic arts. At the legendary documenta V (1972), under the rubric »Questions of reality - image worlds today«, 40 DER SPIEGEL covers were shown. From this vantage point, the cover illustrations have lost none of their topicality as they relate to present-day aesthetics. A cooperative exhibition between The Neue Sammlung, Design in the Pinakothek der Moderne - and DER SPIEGEL Verlag.
