Five Text Pieces

Detmar Blow and Pablo León de la Barra are pleased to announce the opening of their new gallery Blow de la Barra at 35 Heddon Street, London W1

Blow de la Barra’s first exhibition presents work by artist Stefan Brüggemann. Brüggemann works extensively with language, writing text pieces which are later produced in neon or vinyl. Of Mexican and German origin, Brüggemann writes in English, questioning the international standardisation of language, but also its subsequent translations, misspellings and misinterpretations. A neo(n)-polemicist, his work continues the legacy of conceptual artists from the 60s and 70s. Twisting conceptualism, Brüggemann uses language to make critical statements about the art world and the contemporary condition: while his statements operate a powerful critique, they also surrender to that to which they denounce.

Born in 1975, Stefan Brüggemann thinks and works between Mexico City and London and has exhibited internationally. In London, he participated at the group show The Distance Between Me and You at Lisson Gallery (2003), and has had solo shows at the Museum of Installation (1998 and 2001) and independent space 24/7 Gallery (2002); Recent exhibitions include Stefan Brüggemann,Galeria de Arte Mexicano, Mexico City (2004), and the group shows Nothingness at Galerie Eugen Lendl, Palais Wildenstein, Austria (2004), White Noise at REDCAT, Los Angeles, (2004), The Final Floor Show at Objectif Exhibitions, Antwerp (2005) and Off Key at Kunsthalle Bern, Swizterland (2005). Brüggemann also recently curated (Misunderstandings) at the GAM (2005) with works by Jonathan Monk, Mario Garcia Torres and Martin Creed, among others. Brüggemann’s monographic catalogue Capitalism and Schizophrenia with texts by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Nicolas de Oliveira was published earlier this year by Turner Press.

Blow de la Barra is a contemporary art gallery showing the work of emerging international avant-garde artists, many previously unseen in London, within an exiting and intelligent exhibition programme. It is located at Heddon St, off Regent Street. Heddon St has a famous art pedigree -in it was the pub the Golden Calf where the British modernist movement the Vorticists used to drink before they were wiped out in World War I. In the 1970s, David Bowie was photographed in Heddon St for his Ziggy Stardust album cover. Blow de la Barra builds on the experience of 7 years of Detmar Blow as director and gallery owner and on Pablo Leon de la Barra’s 10 years of experience as artist and curator.
