Varda Caivano

Victoria Miro Gallery, London

A new series of paintings. In these works, the processes of perception that inform the practice of painting are discreetly played out. Artist's paintings offer subtle suggestions of images; hints of forms which hover on the verge of definition, confident in their location just outside of representation. They evoke a sense of immediacy, establishing a relationship between the experiences of viewing and of painting.

comunicato stampa

"Painting for me is a way of questioning images, where visible objects with a secret depth appear to reveal a kind of irrational truth. The paintings operate as a bridge, a transitional space that evokes an inner world". Varda Caivano

Victoria Miro Gallery presents a new series of paintings by London-based artist Varda Caivano for her first solo exhibition. In these works, the processes of perception that inform the practice of painting are discreetly played out. Cavaino’s paintings offer subtle suggestions of images; hints of forms which hover on the verge of definition, confident in their location just outside of representation. They evoke a sense of immediacy, establishing a relationship between the experiences of viewing and of painting.

For Caivano, painting enables encounters with an inner world that comes to life in the creation and viewing of a work of art. Existing at the edge of consciousness this inner space is complex and fluid, as it touches upon the enigma that is subjectivity itself. Caivano's works incorporate an uncompromising yet individual approach to the tradition of abstract painting, drawing as much on unique perceptions of colour, space, texture, volume and light as on art history. Quietly contemplative and discerning, these works exist on a level where definitions are suspended in favour of a generous and open-ended exploration.

Varda Caivano was born in 1971 in Buenos Aires, Argentina and graduated from Royal College of Art in 2004 with an MA in Painting. Her work is included in Expanded Painting at the Prague Bienale 2 at the Karlin Hall in Prague from 26 May to 15 September 2005. Exhibitions in 2004 and 2005 included Mourning, Galerie Sies & Höke, Düsseldorf; a group show at Kerlin Gallery, Dublin; Arrivals, Pumphouse Gallery, London; Painting 2004, Victoria Miro Gallery, London; and Twentyfour Thirty, Keith Talent Gallery, London. In 2003 her work was also shown in Dirty Pictures at The Approach Gallery, London and in Selected Paintings at MW projects, London.
