(re)collections

Bay area artist, Michele Pred, opens (re)collections, her debut exhibition at Brian Gross Fine Art on Thursday, July 7, with a reception for the artist from 5:30 - 7:30pm. Pred explores the formal aspects of objects confiscated from post-9/11 travellers at San Francisco International Airport as well as modern everyday items in her sculptures and assemblages.

In this exhibition, Michele Pred will install work comprised of expropriated items amassed from dumpsters of scissors, razor blades, cigarette lighters, knives and other objects deemed security risks on airplanes. In Untitled, an American flag comprised of razor blades, Pred deliberately and painstakingly chose each blade for its particular shape and identifying marks and enameled them in rich shades of red, white, and blue. The flag reflects Preds' ongoing dialogue with collecting and memory, and consumerism and globalization. In another work entitled Nesting, a basket made from interwoven cell phone chargers, Pred manipulates a mass produced item into a modern archeological object. Pred deftly juxtaposes the implications of her materials with their formal beauty.

Born in San Francisco, Michele Pred received her BFA with Distinction from California College of the Arts, in 1990, completed a certificate in French Language in 1990-91 at the University of Sorbonne, Paris, France, and attended graduate classes in Fine Arts at San Francisco State University. Pred has participated in numerous exhibitions in New York and throughout the Bay Area, and internationally at the Millesgarden Museum in Stockholm, Sweden and the Scope Art Fair in London. She is represented in the Veronica and Rene di Rosa Preserve and Foundation in Napa, CA. The exhibition continues through August 20, 2005.

Michele Pred will give a gallery talk about the exhibition and her work on Saturday, July 23 at 2pm. The talk is open to the public.
