The 2005 Bayennale is slated to take place in over 40 venues throughout the Bay Area July 22- August 7, 2005. The festival was instigated by California artist Lowell Darling and London artist Bill Allen, and has been organized by a volunteer committee comprised of Port of Oakland Public Art Committee (PAC) coordinator Geoff Dorn, PAC members Gregory Wiley Edwards, Jen Loy and Juan Carlos Quintana, BorderZone Arts’ Tressa Berman, and Oakland Cultural Affairs Commissioner Devin Satterfield, under the direction of Elisabeth Beaird. Supporting organizations include 21 Grand, Artship, ArtworkSF, BorderZone Arts, Inc., Mama Buzz Café, The LAB, and the Unity Council. The Bayennale is made possible through the generosity of The Port of Oakland, The City of Oakland’s Art and Soul, The East Bay Express and Hertz Equipment Rental.
Opening events will take place in San Francisco on Friday, July 22 and Oakland’s Jack London Square on Saturday, July 23. Exhibitions in Old Oakland will open on Tuesday, July 26 with receptions from 4 to 7 PM. Receptions for 3 Bayennale exhibitions at the Fruitvale Transit Village will take place on Friday evening, July 29. The Port of Oakland hosts “Portfest World Music and Jazz Festival†at Middle Harbor Shoreline Park from 11 AM to 7 PM on Saturday, July 30, followed by Bayennale activities at numerous West Oakland art spaces. Bayennale receptions for exhibitions in Uptown Oakland will occur on Friday, August 5. Lexa Walsh will be inviting members of the public to participate in her Immortalization Project by telling their stories through their personal objects during Bayennale events on August 5, 6 and 7.
A family day celebration will be held at the Fruitvale Transit Village on Saturday, August 6 from 11 AM to 4 PM. Artists will be out in the plaza, interacting with passersby, and there will be activities geared toward children and youth, including a human-scale chess game by Sharilyn Neidhardt, chalk pastels by Julia Jawad, and performances by Calum Kerr, Nguyen Dance Company, Sound Shack, and Chad Stayrook, among others. The Bayennale will conclude with a closing reception featuring Zack Davis on Sunday, August 7, 4-6 PM at Jack London Square. The Bayennale will also host a performance benefit on Tuesday, August 2 at LoBot in West Oakland, 1800 Campbell Street (www.lobotgallery.com). Performers include Beth Custer, Mobius Operandi, Nguyen Dance Company, X-Ray Vision Network, and Sound Shack. Roadside Elixir reunites for a playful exercise in disorientation. Bent on undermining common assumptions about self and environment the artists of roadside elixir will set up shop near the entrance of Golden Gate Park in Peacock Meadow, just east of the Conservatory. Roadside artists will engage Sunday strollers with interactive projects for adventurous exploration of both internal and external geographies. This new age pit stop will act as an Official Welcome Site to unfamiliarize your experience of San Francisco's most beloved and well-traveled public park. The day will unfold as a bona fide happening where unsuspecting passersby can participate, observe, and ultimately interact to makeover their afternoon.
The Roadside Elixir includes: John Graham, representing the El Fornio Historical Society with Father Junipero Serra's Heart in a Jar; Renee Gertler with positive affirmations, Alison Pebworth with the Roadside Show and Tell Character Building Project with guest artists Donna Sproull and choreographer Todd Courage; Claudia Tennyson with Repair Apothecaire; Jerome Waag as the Disorientation Ranger, and others.
All people of all ages are invited to participate. Bring a picnic and blanket and join in for the whole day experience at the beautiful Peacock Meadow.
