British Art Show 6

Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead

A survey of new and recent developments in art from the UK. The exhibition includes sculpture, painting, film, performance and public projects by 50 artists, highlighting a number of current tendencies: artists who mix influences from the 19th and 20th century avant-gardes; film-makers engaging with geo-political issues from personal perspectives; and artists who collaborate with communities and organisations beyond the art institution. References to architecture, the urban environment, landscape and ecology are equally prevalent.

Curated by Alex Farquharson and Andrea Schlieker.

Occurring every five years, the British Art Show is the most ambitious survey of new and recent developments in art from the UK. Organised by Hayward Gallery Touring, British Art Show 6, opens in BALTIC Gateshead, and travels to Manchester, Nottingham and British, occupying venues across each city. Curated by Alex Farquharson and Andrea Schlieker, the exhibition includes sculpture, painting, film, performance and public projects by 50 artists and artists’ groups.

British Art Show 6 highlights a number of current tendencies: artists who freely mix influences from the 19th and 20th century avant-gardes; film-makers engaging with geo-political issues from personal perspectives; and artists who collaborate with communities and organisations beyond the art institution. References to architecture, the urban environment, landscape and ecology are equally prevalent.

British Art Show 6 goes beyond the conventions of touring exhibitions. It features off-site works, a performance programme, and works that respond to the venues, cities and audiences the exhibition travels to. Where relevant, some artists are represented by different works in different cities.

British Art Show 6 comes at a time when the art scene in the UK is exponentially larger, more vibrant, more diverse and more internationally orientated than at any other time in the British Art Show’s 25 year history.
