A World in Black and White
A World in Black and White
The Hong Kong China Tourism Press and the University Museum and Art Gallery,
The University of Hong Kong, jointly present an exhibition of black and
white photographs by the renowned photographer Chen Fuli (Tchan Fou-li). The
exhibition, sponsored by Epson Hong Kong Limited and Idea Color Lab, will
display Chen¡¦s classic works taken between the 1950s and 70s in Vietnam,
Thailand, Cambodia, Hong Kong and mainland China.
Born in 1916 in Chao'an, Guangdong Province, Chen Fuli lived in Southeast
Asia before moving to Hong Kong in 1955. He began learning photography at
the age of 30 when he was in Vietnam, and developed a keen interest in
photomontage and salon photography. The 1960s were the heyday of salon
photography in the region, and Chen achieved great success at both local and
international salon competitions. Chen's photographs are strong in
composition and technique, with an emphasis on pictorial quality; they are
also expressions of the artist's vision and views towards society.
The majority of silver gelatin photographs in the exhibition were developed
by Chen himself. These will be exhibited alongside digital prints produced
from the artist's negatives, allowing viewers to compare the differences
between the two forms of technology. The prints will also reveal the use of
darkroom techniques such as multiple exposures and overlapping images behind
the creation of some of Chens compositions.
