Magic and Loss is a video programme by Italian artists of the last generation being presented in
London as part of Pandaemonium - The London Festival of Moving Images, held at the LUX
Centre (2-4 Hoxton Square, London) from 2 March to 8 April 2001. This year the festival will focus
particular attention on the Italian video scene. Apart from Magic and Loss, a new installation by Grazia
Toderi, winner of the Leone d’Oro at the last Venetian Biennale, will be presented, specially commissioned
and produced by LUX.
Held in collaboration with The British School at Rome and with the support of FENDISSIME, Magic
and Loss is being curated by Cristiana Perrella and Luca Cerizza. The show offers a wide-ranging
and varied retrospective of the best video production in Italy, from 1997 to the present day: from the
animations of Roberto Cuoghi, Diego Perrone and Sarah Ciracì to the sophisticated fiction of
Francesco Vezzoli; from the poetic, atmospherically haunting dreamscapes of Eva Marisaldi, Sara
Rossi and Ottonella Mocellin to the vernacular language of the works of Lara Favaretto,
Vedovamazzei and Franco Silvestro; from the video-performances of Patrick Tuttofuoco, Simone
Berti, Italo Zuffi and Stefania Galegati to the total absence of action in the slow-motion explorations
of architectural spaces by Luisa Lambri. In the works of these artists, imperfection, ellipsis, silence,
magic and loss show that subtraction may be a source of strength in an age of hypertechnology, hype-refficiency,
hypervisibility: they show that the power of communication can be generated from absence.
The first screening: 2 March at 10:00 pm.
A second screening of Magic and Loss will be held at the LUX on Tuesday 6 March at 2:00 pm.
From 2 to 6 March, in tandem with the inauguration of the Pandaemonium Festival in London, Magic
and Loss will also be presented in Rome in the show windows of the FENDISSIMEspace (Via
Fontanella Borghese 56/A).
