Sally Nyolo

"Things which are 'made in Africa' often don't have much to do with Africa itself," the magazine Jazzthetik opined recently when discussing developments in world music. However, it hastened to add: "There is no since she was a child, has been turning towards her roots more and more lately. Following her great success with the African-European quintet "Zap Mama" and two solo albums, she returned to Cameroon at the beginning of last year to record the 'Bikutsi' with women of her native village.

Geoffrey Oryema

Top class, elegant Afro-Pop-Fusion: With the release of his debut album 10 years ago, Geoffrey Oryema succeeded more or less solo in putting his native country, Uganda, on the map of world music. And his latest work, "Spirit", has taken 1st place on the year's best of the "World Music Charts Europe 2000" - even beating old masters Khaled und Youssou N'Dour. African choral singing, "tribal beats", the sounds of the mbira, combine with distorted E-guitars and rock drums.

Natacha Atlas

She is of Egyptian extraction, was born in Belgium, grew up in London and Brussels, and lives in Cairo. She is a singer and dancer with the ethno-dance formation "Transglobal Underground", toured with Led Zeppelin legends Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, took part in Peter Maffay's "Encounters" project, and as a soloist turned towards the "Shaabi". She mixes this form of refined Egyptian folk music with Western dance grooves.
