comunicato stampa

The Muse'e d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean, Mudam, in Luxembourg, opens its doors to the public on 2nd July 2006. Directed by Marie-Claude Beaud, this new contemporary art venue will present a programme of temporary exhibitions open to all fields of present-day creation.

After many years of prefiguration activities, notably in the frame of the “Be the Artists’ Guest" programme, Mudam will open its doors to a local and international public whose curiosity has regularly been stirred up over the years. Conceived by the Sino-American architect Ieoh Ming Pei, the new building has a total area of 9 000 square meters with almost 4 800 square meters of exhibition and public spaces. It houses, among other things, an auditorium, a shop and a cafeteria.

The museum will show through temporary exhibitions the works it has accumulated over the last 10 years. Mudam’s collection - accessible on the site http://www.mudam.lu - is made up of the works of more than 120 artists: key figures in the world of art today, among whom are Tony Cragg, Hussein Chalayan, Marina Abramovic, Imi Knoebel, Shirin Neshat, Thomas Ruff, Cy Twombly, Doris Drescher, Katharina Sieverding, Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, Julian Schnabel, Tina Gillen, Gunther Forg, Helmut Federle, Franz West, Wolfgang Tillmans, Peter Halley, and also Txomin Badiola, Joao Penalva, M+M, Didier Vermeiren, Joan Herna'ndez Pijuan, Jack Goldstein, Laure Tixier… From photography to painting, drawing to video, from multimedia to fashion, design to graphics, and from sound to architecture, Mudam’s collection covers the many faces of contemporary art.

Mudam is standing up to the challenge of constructing from scratch the form and content of an ever-changing museum, and has chosen to welcome the first visitors with a metaphorical project of present and future processes involving a dialogue of all the art forms. The opening exhibition with the evocative title, “Eldorado", gathers together works, some of which are specific orders, dedicated to the start-up of this new cultural venue in Luxembourg. Among the exhibiting artists are Erwan & Ronan Bouroullec, James Coleman, Richard Deacon, Wim Delvoye, Gaylen Gerber, Cai Guo-Qiang, Mark Lewis, Pipilotti Rist, Fernando Sa'nchez Castillo, Bert Theis, Nari Ward, Konstantin Grcic and Tobias Putrih.

In the programme from 2007, there is a retrospective from the Luxembourgish artist Michel Majerus, followed by “Tomorrow Now" dedicated to design and science-fiction, and a monographic exhibition by the American Glenn Ligon.
