Arena 1 Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Watermark, a group exhibition exploring themes of home and displacement curated by a. diamos. The exhibition, which runs from July 8 - August 19, will open with a reception for the artists on Saturday, July 8th from 7 - 10 pm.

Many of the artists in this show utilize techniques familiar to the film industry including blue screen composition, video and effects animation. All the artists employ various strategies of displacement to de-familiarize the viewer from the usual mass media bombardment of images thus enabling a view of commonplace scenarios from unfamiliar standpoints.

A dominant cultural theme since the early nineteenth century, displacement expresses the personal and political alienation that characterizes modernism as well as defining intellectual thought in the modern era, i.e. Marx’s theories of commodity and fetishism and Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis.

Watermark alludes to recent natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina whose social and human costs were exacerbated by the politics of class and race and in whose wake have come indelible images of devastation and loss of “home" - both the home that we take with us and the home that we leave behind. Globalized mass media has made the world accessible, but what we perceive are disassociated images on a screen, two steps removed, thus dislocated from reality. In selecting work for this exhibition, curator a. diamos asks, “What would be the watermark for reality? How can we ever be certain that we are seeing it?"

Arena 1 is an exhibition space founded by Santa Monica Art Studios directors Sherry Frumkin and Yossi Govrin. Based in an historic hangar the Santa Monica Airport, Arena 1 invites newly established as well as internationally known curators to develop innovative and compelling exhibitions.

Artists: Kim Abeles, Michael Barton Miller, Allan deSouza, Victor Lozano Jr., Angela Diamos, Sabrina Raaf, Kim Greist, Reynold Reynolds, Niku Kashef, Patrick Jolley, Lesley Krane and Kyungmi Shin.
