Nachtblicke

Annegret Soltau belongs to the most eminent contemporary german artists. Her obstinate artworks, which can be found among numerous renowned collections, were awarded in 2000 by the “ Wilhelm-Loth-Award" of the City of Darmstadt. This award has been acknowledged by an extensive exhibition in spring 2006 and will now partly be shown in Berlin.

With an enormous persistence and radicalness Soltau deals since more than three decades with the picture of herself. Under assistance of blunt stitches Soltau spins strings over her photographical self portraits. She tears up inner worlds and closes the so produced injuries with needle and cotton. Even if it seems that Soltau above all focuses on herself, her work comprises also the complete history of the human being. Her themes are as much archaic as surprisingly topical: the picture of the body, violence, pregnancy and birth, alternation of generations and the quest for ones own roots. Soltau has created an uvre which captivates with its contrasting facets, its bluntness and intimacy. The viewer becomes a witness of a merciless expression of art.
