Thomas Ruff
The Sprengel Project

January 21, 2007 - April 1, 2007

The Sprengel Museum Hannover will present photographs by Thomas Ruff (born in1958). Ruff lives and works in Dusseldorf. The show will be from January 21 to April 1, 2007. Thomas Ruff has been invited to present works that are part of Sprengel Museum Hannover’s Permanent Collection. He has, thus, selected works expressly for this purpose which were realised after 1945.

Thomas Ruff is well known as an artist who works in series, referring to motifs and shapes that are integral to art history. His early series “Interieurs" (1979-1983), for example, can be seen as an example of classical photography, making direct references to art history. Thomas Ruff transports the viewer to a new, cooler photo-aesthetic that allows one to carefully examine what is being portrayed.

In his dialogue with paintings and objects from the Sprengel Museum Hannover’s Permanent Collection, fields of tension will challenge viewers, making each individual’s gaze more open to perceiving what various works of art have in common, what overlaps and what differences exist.
This offers an opportunity for new, unaccustomed interaction with Thomas Ruff’s oeuvre as well as with recent (over the last 60 years) art history.

Works from the following series by Thomas Ruff will be on view:
Portraits with neutral background (1986-1991; since 1998) / magazine photos (1990-1991)/ Stars (1989 - 1992)/ L.m.v.d.r. (since 1999) / Interieurs (1979-1983)/ Posters (1995-1996) / Nudes (since 1999) / Substrat (since 2001) / Machines (2003) / JPGS (2005)

Tatjana Marusic
A Woman Under The Influence - to cut a long story short
January 24 - May 13, 2007

Tatjana Marusic was born in Croatia in 1971. Although an artist from Switzerland, she lives and works both in Berlin und Lucerne. Her 3-channel video/audio installation, ‘A Woman Under The Influence - to cut a long story short’ (2003, 9.30 min.), which has received several awards, is currently on show in the Blue Box of the Sprengel Museum Hannover. The video deals with self-estrangement, with emotional and psychological inner turmoil. Tatjana Marusic used found footage material from a B-movie Hollywood production called "Citizen Ruth" (1996, starring Laura Dern and directed by Alexander Payne) and, after extracting it from its original story, turned it into a psychological evaluation of the protagonist. As suggested in the title, a second film is included through the female figure: John Cassavetes’ `A Woman Under The Influence` - again a portrait of a distraught woman. The artist thereby consciously employed technical hitches, i.e. the disturbances in the picture and sound caused through faulty transmission in the cable network, as a stylistic device. The scratched optical surfaces, together with the breaks in the sound, correspond to the woman’s personality which Marusic draws with great sensitivity, so producing both a sensitive as well as an uncompromising picture.

The show is from 24 January to 13 May, 2007. The opening is at 6.30 pm on 23 January, 2007 when Karin Orchard, the curator, will discuss the exhibition with the artist.
