Tino Sehgal / Maurizio Cattelan

MMK - Museum fur Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt

The artist's work consists of situations that arise by virtue of the fact that he has people carry out certain acts in an art context. He reflects and comments on not only the spiritual and economic mechanisms of art, but on social production per se. In doing so he both confirms and evades the customary logic of production, substituting actions, conversations and events for the material work of art.

Tino Sehgal’s work consists of situations that arise by virtue of the fact that he has people carry out certain acts in an art context. Such an action occurs, for example, if a museum guard addresses visitors with »this is so contemporary« in a voice that gradually gets louder. When selecting his performers Sehgal pays great attention to their function within the particular production and has them practice the relevant actions in great detail; nevertheless he makes certain that plenty of scope is left for surprising or unforeseen things to happen in the course of each »performance«, a factor that is intensified primarily by the audience’s response.

Because Sehgal declines to document his work photographically or on film it can only be experienced in direct confrontation with the »protagonists«. Parallel to this strategy of avoiding any form of object/record, and it is one that as such subverts the art market, Sehgal is highly interested in taking part in the art business cycle and participating in the discourse in art. This is the reason why his works, which he construes as editions, can be purchased by institutions and collectors. With these predefined settings, Sehgal reflects and comments on not only the spiritual and economic mechanisms of art, but on social production per se. In doing so he both confirms and evades the customary logic of production, substituting actions, conversations and events for the material work of art. Tino Sehgal will be realizing a new work for and in the MMK.

Maurizio Cattelan

Since March of this year, Museum für Moderne Kunst (MMK) has been collaborating with artist Maurizio Cattelan (born 1960) to produce a series of new works that he has devised exclusively for Frankfurt. In a specific context of the MMK, each month Cattelan realizes a new work. The works are located and arise inside, outside or close by the museum. They are each inserted into the respective current presentation of the MMK Collection, without the exact point in time of their installation ever being expressly communicated to the public. Cattelan’s works, which gradually aggregate to form an overall project, are the first artistic statement he has made in Germany for several years. We cannot yet predict when the current project will come to an end. Cattelan is creating another piece in collaboration with the Portikus.
