At times it seems as if unpolished, poetic photography has passed The
Netherlands by, notes the photographer and guest curator Machiel Botman
(Heartbeat, Rainchild). Certainly, names like Robert Frank, Christer
Strömholm and Daido Moriyama are part of the canon here too, but how many
here know the work of Anders Petersen, Antoine d'Agata or J.H. Engström?
These six do, says Botman of the photographers he selected for the
exhibition A Good World in Noorderlicht Photogallery. They maintain contacts
with each other and with the photographers named above, by mail and at
workshops, on the basis of friendship and equality. More important yet: like
their kindred spirits they have the gift of looking within themselves with
photography.
They are also newcomers. Not necessarily because they are young they range
in age from 20 to 70 but they are new to the discipline. Several of them
have just begun photographing, others have been working for years in the
seclusion of their own world. None of them commands a wide audience yet.
It is precisely these stories that have not yet taken shape that intrigue
Botman. He compares them with receiving a present: You get excited, you get
to unwrap it, make it part of yourself.' He feels it is a great privilege to
literally be able to look inside another's mind and soul, because this is
about people who are prepared to expose their vulnerabilities and open
themselves up by means of photography.'
The title of the exhibition comes from the question posed by Robert Frank in
his foreword to Crocodile Tears, the photobook with which Jerome Sother has
just debuted: Is this a good world for him and us?¹ A Good World is
comprised of many-layered images that stimulate, enchant and alarm. Each and
every one of them, says Botman, are part of a search for an answer to
Frank's question: Is this a good world?
Opening Friday, February 16, at 5:00 p.m.
