David Thorpe and Matthew Buckingham

Solo show

Known for his meticulous collages, "The Defeated Life Restored" will be David Thorpe's most ambitious installation to date. Huge, intricately carved, wood and glass screens are set with a series of botanical studies; this all forms the backdrop to three totemic star-sculptures. Interested in the failures of 17th-century land reformers as well as the social consciousness advocated by the Arts and Crafts movement in the early 20th-century.

Solo show

One of today's most significant critical artists, Matthew Buckingham presents three new film and video works. He investigates history and its representation, addressing present day realities such as the impact of globalisation and colonialism. "The Spirit and the Letter" refers to the unsettled legacy of 18th-century social reformer Mary Wollstonecraft; 'Everything I Need' imagines the thoughts of psychologist and radical feminist Charlotte Wolff on her return to Germany following exile in the 1930s. There will also be a site specific installation "Specularia" engaging with the history of Camden Arts Centre - its architecture and changing function throughout time.
