On May 12th The Lab 101 will open its doors to reveal a children’s playroom transformed and created by the San Francisco based artist Sam Flores. For this installation, Flores will paint murals designed to inspire a child’s imagination, and introduce custom children’s furniture & toys. Flores hopes to provide a sanctuary for each child, “to explore their limitless imagination and allow their own creative vision to develop.”

Fifteen years after first arriving on the West Coast from New Mexico, Sam Flores, an art school evacuee and self-taught illustrator, has established his place in the modern art movement as a master of fine art and product design - achieving popular recognition through clothing lines, skateboard & snowboard designs, signature home décor pieces, and a limited edition collection of vinyl toys. His artwork appears regularly in press publications and has shown in galleries in Japan, France, Italy, Germany & Singapore, among other locations throughout the world. He has also published two books of illustrations and prints that are currently available in limited release.

Flores’ current fine art work carries a voice and vision that is instantly identifiable. The exotic characters and natural landscapes he is known for are at once lush and meticulous. Flores’ signature female Fatima figures are often draped in flowing gowns with oversized welcoming hands gracefully placed upon their laps. Childlike characters adorned in animal masks and intricate, flowing floral bouquets are a nod to the work of his greatest influences: American painter Michael Parkes & Maurice Sendak - creator of the classic children’s storybook: “Where the Wild Things Are”. Other influences include 19th Century Art Nouveau icon, Alphonse Mucha & American poster artist Derek Hess.

A recent exhibition entitled “Water Under the Bridge” saw Sam create a 15-foot tall sculptural depiction of his signature Fatima doll that welcomed audiences with a lily pond of koi fish & lovebirds gathering beneath her flowing kimono dress. Flores’ show was applauded for his vivacious use of color, sophisticated Asian landscapes, and wistful, kimono adorned geisha. Painstaking gold leaf application used in many of his pieces embodied the reflective quality of water and evoked sensations of delicacy and elegance. One can only image how spectacular his children’s inspired installation will be.
