LFL Gallery is pleased to announce that we will be kicking off the fall s
eason with an exhibition of paintings by Matt Anderson.
The exhibition will consist of a group of intimate portraits of strangers
and landscapes; subjects taken from orphaned snapshots which Anderson di
scovered in boxes on sidewalks, or for sale in street stalls. Through his
process of engagement with these indexes of once-human presence (images
that once meant a great deal to someone), he lovingly re-creates them wi
th the more traditional technique of oil on board, imbuing them with new
energy, meaning and value.
His subject choices are never random: there is
always something, like a stance, a piece of clothing or an essence for w
hich he feels a strange affinity or nostalgia. These forgotten memories a
nd individuals are memorialized: notions of time, past, present and futur
e begin to change and Anderson enters into a familiar relationship with t
he unknown. Once in the gallery, the viewer may feel that he/she is looki
ng at Anderson's friends and family - but, whoever they are or were, they
still remain anonymous to all. An important aspect of this process is h
is desire to celebrate his own past by choosing images of the lower/middl
e class white American.
Born in Missouri, Matt Anderson now lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
This will be Matt Anderson's first solo exhibition.
Reception: September 6, 6-8 PM
Next exhibition: Lansing-Dreiden October 18 through November 24, 2001
