Sculture nel Parco

4 nuove installazioni

all’imprevisto, all’immaginazione e al caso.

A12, Petra Blaisse, Cliostraat, Jeppe Hein, Tobias Rehberger, Tomas Saraceno, Monika
Sosnowska.

Sculptures in the Park

Elmgreen & Dragset, Carsten Höller, Damian Ortega, Piotr Uklanski

Curated by: Francesco Bonami and Sarah Cosulich Canarutto

Villa Manin Centre for Contemporary Art opens on June 2nd 2007 four new spectacular installations in the park. With the established Sculptures in the Park project, that sees its annual enrichment with site specific works realised by international artists, the Centre wishes to maintain the link with the history of the ancient villa by reinterpreting the context and intertwining it with the art of today. This stimulating dialogue between past and present, which begun in 2004, has contributed to transform the beautiful park of Villa Manin, summer residence of the last Doge of Venice, in an interactive, dynamic and surprising place.

The new projects of 2007
With ambiguous symbols, amusing interactions or surpising interferences Elmgreen & Dragset, Carsten Höller, Damian Ortega and Piotr Uklanski contribute to reinforce the main function of the park, creating original installations that question the idea of the game in the everyday.

The duo Elmgreen & Dragset transfigures the perception of space and of public architecture with unique installations that challenge daily expectations. The Berlin based artists, famous for the many interventions in urban environments, create Ti sto pensando (I am thinking about you), a phone booth with a pleasant surprise for the visitors of the park.
Following the great success obtained at the London Tate Modern with the installation of steep and fast slides, Carsten Höller brings to the park of Villa Manin an astonishing merry-go-round that leads the spectator to reflect upon the value of slowness and observation. Especially modified, the merry-go-round allows a renewed attention towards all what surround us.
Displacement is provoked by the works of Mexican Damian Ortega, who focuses on everyday objects by altering their meaning and function. Ortega, famous for his exploded beetle presented at the 2003 Venice Biennial, in the park of Villa Manin creates Armazón de Ensamble (Ensemble Case), a giant mechanism of a watch built on top of a pyramid on which visitors can walk, thus literally entering the mechanisms of time.
Finally, the Polish artist Piotr Uklanski, known for his daring and equivocal works, presents in the forecourt of the villa the outline of a giant hand that scenographically embraces the building’s façade. He gives form to an ambiguous image that, in its theatricality, allows multiple layers of interpretation. Uklanski adopts the cultural, political and social iconography of the contemporary world to underline in an ironical way its paradoxes and contradictions.

The new sculptures join the ones already present in the park, enabling the visitors to encounter and interact with contemporary art in an ever changing way, thus discovering how it is so deeply related to everyone’s reality. The works in the Park of Villa Manin alternate amusement and relaxation, observation and participation, repast and reflection, disorientation and entertainment. If in the times of the Venetian Doges who spent the summer at Villa Manin, the park was a place for the contemplation of nature, today it becomes a meeting point, a place for relations between art and landscape. The works spark a dialogue with the context which hosts them and, at the same time, they create a pathway which turns game into experience.

THE OTHER SCULPTURES IN THE PARK
The Sculpture Park of Villa Manin is animated also by the other installations realised in the past years, many surprising projects which involve the visitor’s gaze, body and mind.

The projects of 2006
With the installation The House, Paweł Althamer explores one of the most remote areas of the garden reclaiming an abandoned structure, half hidden by the thick vegetation which becomes a magical place and tells a different story to each one of us.
Manin City, Michael Beutler’s spectacular maze, connects to the ancient tradition of maze-like gardens and sparkles a playful dialogue with the architectural setting of the baroque complex and with the nature of the site.

The Projects of 2005
By making us roll on a grass slide, Paola Pivi inebriates us with the euphoria of nature.
By means of a colourful group bench, Twister, Patrick Tuttofuoco unites us physically in the observation of landscape.
Rirkrit Tiravanija welcomes us with an espresso in his Teahouse, a tilted cube merging the slowness of the oriental tradition with the velocity of the western lifestyle.
In his colourful cage Alberto Garutti lets nature grow freely while man cannot do anything but observe it from the outside with a sense of “envy”.
Surprise and bewilderment are the effects of the work of Andreas Slominski who, with a subtle and ironic intervention, modifies the direction of a path and forces us to look at the park from a different point of view.
With his “Go” game in huge scale, Gabriel Orozco’s work becomes the symbol of the concept of play as freedom of thought and movement, as an experience which is not subjected to limits or impositions but open to the unexpected, to imagination and to chance.

Other artists that in the past have exhibited their works in the park of Villa Manin:

Sosnowska.
