Five London dealers focus on sculpture

The extraordinary range of sculpture of the highest quality to be found in London will be highlighted by exhibitions mounted by five dealers during the fourth staging of London Sculpture Week which takes place from Thursday 14 to Friday 22 June 2007. Sculpture from ancient Egypt, classical Greece and Rome, Asian civilisations stretching from Mongolia to India, Europe from the Romanesque to the Renaissance periods as well as post-war Britain will all be featured. The event is generously sponsored by Heath Lambert Group.

The five participating dealers are Sam Fogg Ltd (medieval sculpture, works of art and manuscripts), Daniel Katz Ltd (European sculpture from 900 to 1900), Robin Katz (20th century British art), Rossi & Rossi (Indian, Tibetan and Himalayan art) and Rupert Wace Ancient Art (Egyptian, Classical, Near Eastern and European antiquities). Each of them will mount a special exhibition for London Sculpture Week.

The oldest pieces will be found at Rupert Wace Ancient Art in a display of sculpture from Egypt, Greece and Rome. The highlight is a Roman marble figure of Asclepius, the god of medicine, dating from the 2nd century AD. Standing 68.6 cm high, the god wears an elegantly draped himation or cloak that falls from his left shoulder across his smoothly polished chest. The red paint of the drapery is remarkable for its preservation. This imposing piece of classical Roman sculpture was formerly in a private collection in Hamburg.

Asian art will be represented by Rossi & Rossi who will exhibit a selection of Himalayan sculpture. Among them will be a North-west Indian brass, silver and copper inlay figure of the celestial Buddha Vairocana from the 7th/8th century, a Mongolian gilt copper figure of the tantric deity Achala from the 17th/early 18th century, a Nepalese clay standing Buddha from the 11th/12th century and a superb bronze statue with silver and copper of Lama Lowo Khenchen Sonam Lhundrup from Southern Tibet dating from the first half of the 16th century.

Sam Fogg will focus on European carvings in wood, stone, marble and alabaster, dating from the 11th to the early 16th century. During this period the Romanesque and then the Gothic styles prevailed in Western Europe and it saw the emergence of free-standing sculpture independent of architectural structure. Among the highlights will be a standard carried in procession by the Confraternity of the Holy Blood in Bruges, c. 1480-1500. This masterpiece was presumed lost and until now has only been known from an 18th century drawing. A splendid example of Romanesque sculpture is a large white marble crouching lion, carved with naturalistic detail, from Southern Italy dating from the late 12th or early 13th century.

Daniel Katz is exhibiting a remarkable group of Italian Renaissance bronzes from the collection of Alfred Beit (1853-1906), the mining magnate and philanthropist. These include an extremely fine cast of the famed Spinario by Severo da Ravenna (active c.1496-1543), its size being a testament to the artist’s skill in creating a lightness and delicacy in the gesture of the young boy pulling a thorn from his foot. A tour de force of modelling can be seen in the heroic Neptune depicting the god in his chariot drawn by hippocampi through a stormy sea by the Venetian sculptor Tiziano da Minio (1511-52) while a luxuriously finished Shouting Horseman, the rider partly gilt with silver eyes, is an exquisite example of early 16th century Paduan bronze casting at its finest from the circle of Andrea Briosco, called Riccio (1470-1532).

By contrast Robin Katz specialises in 20th century British art and for his first exhibition in his new gallery space in his father’s premises at 13 Old Bond Street he is showing a selection of post-war British sculpture. Among the pieces will be a relief by Sir Eduardo Paolozzi (1924-2005), made in 1981 for the famous Appicella restaurant in London. Also on show will be Thorn, 1958, by Robert Adams (1917-84), a remarkable twisted form cast in bronze, together with an important work by Barbara Hepworth (1903-75), Six Forms on a Circle (1967) carved in Hepworth’s native St Ives’ black slate. A unique iron and composition piece Bird II Opus 218, 1956-57, came from the collection of its creator Lynn Chadwick (1914-2003).

Over the centuries, sculpture has been considered by many to be the highest form of art. It can be traced back to Neolithic civilisations and contemporary sculpture still retains a more powerful impact than almost any other work of art. The galleries featured in London Sculpture Week are all based in the Mayfair area so that visitors may easily see the five special exhibitions which illustrate the depth and range of expertise in the field to be found in the city.
