Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam

In 1999 Bruce Mau designed a massive documentation capture project entitled the Book Machine for the exhibition Laboratorium. It was designed to be both a cataloguing system and real-time print performance tracking the exhibition's process and residue over a three-month period. By the end of the exhibition, the Book Machine had produced a set of volumes that were from then on culled and edited for a final exhibition catalogue. This process resulted in a 500 pages book that explores the laboratory and the studio on basis of their various concepts within different disciplines.

LABORATORIUM singles out complex scientific and artistic investigations, and the limits and possibilities of the places where knowledge and culture are made, presenting the documentation of experiments, laboratories, projects and archives initiated by participants from various scientific and artistic fields. In addition, essays by writers trace the intellectual implications of the workplace and process of investigations.
