Richard Serra

Meyerovich Gallery, San Francisco

Between the Torus & the Sphere. In the gallery exhibition there are a group of medium size one-color etchings. These new works are the perfect combination of his earlier torqued ellipse etchings and the 2004 series, Arc of the Curve. The prints are heavily textured, with deeply etched horizontal black lines. Serra has spoken of a concept of "the speed of the line" and these prints illustrate it to perfection.

Between the Torus & the Sphere

Meyerovich Gallery’s summer exhibition schedule features world-renowned artist Richard Serra. Considered one of the most influential artists of his generation, Serra a San Francisco native, is known for his massive steel sculptures in urban settings that puncture both physical and psychological space.

This summer (opening June 3) New York’s Museum of Modern Art will present “Richard Serra Sculpture: Forty Years,” a huge-scale retrospective of the work of an artist whom many regard as the most innovative sculptor and one of the most important artists of his generation.

Meyerovich Gallery is very pleased to exhibit new etchings by the San Francisco native, Richard Serra. “Between the Torus & the Sphere” runs from July 16 – September 29 and is one of the premier exhibitions in the gallery’s contemporary space. In the gallery exhibition there are a group of medium size one-color etchings. These new works are the perfect combination of his earlier torqued ellipse etchings and the 2004 series, Arc of the Curve. The massiveness of his etchings from Arc of the Curve are fused with the grace of the ellipses to create Between the Torus and the Sphere (2006). The prints are heavily textured, with deeply etched horizontal black lines. Serra has spoken of a concept of "the speed of the line" and these prints illustrate it to perfection. Some seem to be moving faster, others slower, but all possess the elegance and sophistication that define Serra's printmaking.

Growing up in the Outer Sunset near Ocean Beach, Serra began his relationship with steel as a young man when he worked in steel mills to support himself during college. He attended UC Berkeley and then transferred to UC Santa Barbara, where he earned a BA in English literature in 1961. He went on to earn degrees at Yale, training as a painter. In 1966, Serra made his first sculptures from non-traditional materials such as fiberglass and rubber. During the late 60s he continued to focus on sculpture and began working with steel.

Today, Serra has been the subject of more than 170 one-man exhibitions and his works are in public collections in Canada, Japan, and throughout the U.S. and Europe. He has received numerous honors, including the Gold Medal for Sculpture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2002. He continues to produce large-scale steel structures for sites in the US and Europe. He and his wife, Clara Weyergraf-Serra, live in New York City and in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
