comunicato stampa

Art Basel Miami Beach is the most important art show in the United States, a cultural and social highlight for the Americas. As the sister event of Switzerland's Art Basel, the most prestigious art show worldwide for the past 38 years, Art Basel Miami Beach combines an international selection of top galleries with an exciting program of special exhibitions, parties and crossover events featuring music, film, architecture and design. Exhibition sites are located in the city's beautiful Art Deco District, within walking distance of the beach and many hotels.

An exclusive selection of more than 200 leading art galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa will exhibit 20th and 21st century artworks by over 2,000 artists. The exhibiting galleries are among the world's most respected art dealers, offering exceptional pieces by both renowned artists and cutting-edge newcomers. Special exhibition sections feature young galleries, performance art, public art projects and video art. The show will be a vital source for art lovers, allowing them to both discover new developments in contemporary art and experience rare museum-calibre artworks.

Top-quality exhibitions in the museums of South Florida and special programs for art collectors and curators also help make the event a special time for encountering art. And every year, a greater number of art collectors, artists, dealers, curators, critics and art enthusiasts from around the world participate in Art Basel Miami Beach - the favorite winter meeting place for the international art world.

Art Sound Lounge: Art for Your Ears

«Art Sound Lounge» at Art Basel Miami Beach offers visitors the opportunity to take in music and audio pieces in
the attractive surroundings of the Miami Beach Botanical Garden. Listeners are provided with a personal listening system to use as they stroll through the gardens. The 90-minute program entitled «Decked Out: A History of the Turntable» features 16 tracks by artists and musicians like John Cage, Grandmaster Flash, Christian Marclay, DJ Spooky, and Pierre Schaeffer, to name only a few.
The soundtrack for «Art Sound Lounge» was selected and compiled by David Weinstein, Managing Director of Art Radio WPS1.org. «Art Sound Lounge» at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden is open daily (December 5 to December 9) from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m.

The Cultural Hub on the Beach: Art Positions

At this year’s «Art Positions», 20 young galleries will be provided with shipping containers where they can show projects by their up-and-coming artists. The participating galleries are from Brazil, China, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Norway, Poland, and the USA. A number of the artists’ projects engage with the shipping container as an exhibition space or focus on the proximity to the beachfront at Miami Beach. In cooperation with Art Radio WPS1.org, Art Basel Miami Beach will also be presenting a series of public programs revolving around the theme «Concrete Waves: An Homage to Skate Culture». These projects include DJ and skate performances, films, live radio broadcasts, and an installation by American artist Ryan McGinness. The opening night of «Art Positions» (December 5) features a free concert by the godfathers of punk rock, Iggy and the Stooges.

Art Basel Conversations: Close Encounters with Leading Art-World Personalities

This year’s edition of «Art Basel Conversations» features thematic panel discussions based around the topics of «Collectors as Producers», «The Future of the Museum in India», «Women in Art», and «Criticizing Art Criticism».
Leading artists, collectors, curators, and critics will be participating as panelists and then meeting with the audience.
Speakers include such prominent personalities as Anupam Poddar, Patrizia Re Rebaudengo, Maja Hoffmann, Richard Flood, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Dave Hickey, and Daniel Birnbaum. The series reflects Art Basel’s commitment to enhancing the exchange of ideas among the art world’s movers and shakers. It is complemented by «Art Salon», where publishers, artists, and art institutions can present their latest projects in a more intimate framework and will be discussing subjects including the art scenes of France, Russia, China, New Zealand, and Miami.

«Art Video Lounge»: Video Art of the Pacific Northwest

American curator Michael Darling has been entrusted with planning this year’s «Art Video Lounge». He has put together a program of video pieces by 16 artists who live, or have spent an extended period, in the Pacific Northwest, entitling it «Thermostat: Video and the Pacific Northwest». Three special programs involving the participating artists, among them Gary Hill, will also be shown: «Return of the Wild West», «Miranda July (Portland) Sampler», and «Storytelling». The «Art Video Lounge» at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden is open daily (December 5 to December 9) from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Art Perform: Live Art on the Beach

Art Basel Miami Beach is continuing its support of artists working in the sphere of performance and live art with the third edition of its performance program. Art Perform is a platform for emerging international artists invited to devise and present specially commissioned site- and context-specific artworks. Selected by Jens Hoffmann, Director of the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco, six artists (Roman Ondak, Marepe, Donald Urquhart, Laura Lima, Olivia Plender, and Shana Lutker) from four countries have created presentations that directly engage with the realities of Miami and the particular conditions of the art show. All presentations take place in the Art Perform area at «Art Positions», the exhibition and event venue in Collins Park on the beach.

Art Projects: Art in Public Spaces

«Art Projects» features 9 projects by internationally renowned artists from 8 countries. On show in public spaces in Miami Beach, these works engage directly with the spectator, interrupting the daily routine of passers-by in poetic, alienating, or surprising ways. «Art Projects» offers fascinating insight into leading contemporary artists’ interpretation of new art in public spaces. Most of the pieces are newly created or installed site-specifically for Art Basel Miami Beach.

New: Art Supernova

Art Basel Miami Beach is introducing a new sector this year: «Art Supernova». It features 20 galleries presenting new works by both emerging and renowned artists in an experimental group show. The concept offers an alternative form of gallery presentation in an art fair context.
«Art Supernova» takes a collaborative approach that links the participating galleries in a new way. Instead of each
gallery having its own separate booth, the exhibitors in «Art Supernova» have interconnected exhibition spaces, a common storage area, and shared facilities for presenting works on paper, videos, performances, artist files, books, and catalogs. They also share a joint office space and a cafeteria. Austrian artist Peter Kogler is creating a sitespecific work for the sector. «Art Supernova» gives visitors an opportunity to discover a wide array of new works fresh from the studio.

Art Kabinett: 22 Curated Mini-Exhibitions

«Art Kabinett» gives 22 participating galleries from eight countries the opportunity to present small curated exhibitions.
The projects chosen by the Selection Committee are shown in a separate cubicle of the exhibitor’s booth.
The exhibition concepts for «Art Kabinett» are diverse, representing everything from thematic group exhibitions and one-person shows to installations. The spectrum ranges from modern masters to established artists and the youngest generation. A special section of the catalog presents the projects in detail. «Art Kabinett» is an additional attraction for visitors and enables galleries to complement the arrangement of their booths with a curated exhibition. In undertaking this initiative, Art Basel intensifies its efforts to achieve a meaningful combination of commercial and cultural exhibition activity.

New Partnership between Art Basel and Cartier

Cartier, one of the world's leading luxury goods companies, has joined Art Basel and Art Basel Miami Beach as a new Associate Sponsor. For the Art Basel Miami Beach show, Cartier will create the Cartier Dôme, located in the Miami Beach Botanical Garden. In addition, the Fondation Cartier will present itself to the public in the Art Guest Lounge, in a special space designed by world-famous architect Jean Nouvel.
