Lucian Freud

Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebaek

"I paint what I see, not what you hope that I see."

comunicato stampa

Lucian Freud is best known for his portraits and nude studies in which the presentation has an almost existential character. With an unsentimental look and painters brush he presents his models almost skinless. At first glance it seems mercyless but at the same time it reveals an intensity replacing the outer beauty with a recognition of something truly human.

Hockney-portrait
Freuds models are people he feels close to: family, friends, lovers and artist colleagues. The exhibition includes a.o. a portrait of David Hockney.

From the 1940's and on
The earliest works in the exhibition are from the 1940s. Several drawings and paintings show the artist's experimenting with with dreamlike ideas, with people and plants in strange juxtapositions.

From the 1950s on Freud began to paint portraits and nude studies in more subdued colours. He renounced his otherwise unwavering faith in the drawing, began to paint with less control, painting standing up instead of sitting down and laid the paint on in thicker, looser layers. The result being paintings with that very consistent and personal angle which has now been his hallmark for forty years.

80 works - several exhibited for the first time
The exhibition comprises about 60 paintings and 20 works on paper created over the last sixty years, many of which are now being shown in public for the first time. Among these are: Landscape with Figtree and Boat 1947; Dead Bird 1945; Portrait of a Youth, Fragment c. 1956; Child Resting 1961; Annabel 1972; Guy and Speck Fragment 1981; Expecting The Fourth 2005; Night Portrait, Face Down 1999-2000; Garden Painting 1995.

Biography
Lucian Freud, grandson of Sigmund Freud, was born in 1922 in Berlin. He moved with his family to London in 1933 and six years later became a British citizen. He trained with Cedric Morris at East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing in Dedham, and his first solo exhibition was held in the Lefevre Gallery in London in 1944.

In 1954 Lucian Freud was one of the three English artists who represented England at the Venice Biennale. Today he is 85 years old, is still an active artist living in London and has registered 12 children, several of whom have become designers, authors and poets.

Louisiana showed Lucian Freud for the first time in 1987 in the group exhibition School of London. Since then the museum has acquired the fantastic etching Woman with Tattoo (1996) for its collection.

Exhibition tour
The exhibition is curated by the Freud specialist Catherine Lampert who is a good friend of the artist and the former director of the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London. The exhibition has been organized by the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) in collaboration with Louisiana og the Gemeentemuseum den Haag, to which it continues after Louisiana.
